Visible vs conspicuous. There’s a difference, and it matters on the road.

Visible means you can physically be seen - it’s what you can measure in a lab. Contrast, brightness, reflectivity. Conspicuous means a driver’s brain actually registers you. They’re not the same thing.

Real world examples:
- A rider in full hi-vis on a busy urban road, surrounded by signs, parked cars and brake lights, is visible. But everything around them is competing for the driver’s attention, so they may not be conspicuous.
- Fluoro colours work in daylight but do nothing at night. Reflective gear works under headlights but does nothing in daytime. Wearing the right one at the wrong time means you’re less conspicuous than you think.
- Reflective socks or strips on your ankles beat a reflective vest. In QUT night research, drivers recognised 90% of riders wearing ankle and knee reflectors, and only 50% wearing a vest alone (Wood et al., 2012). It’s not how much you wear, it’s what the brain registers.

So ride to be conspicuous, not just visible. And the other half belongs to drivers. Conspicuity is the rider’s tool. Looking for riders is the driver’s. “Looked but failed to see” crashes happen when drivers scan for cars, not bikes. Expect riders. Look twice. A metre matters.

We are saddened to learn of the passing of Lyndon Downing (Park Orchards BMX Club), a life member of AusCycling (formerly BMX Australia).

A respected innovator, volunteer and friend to many, Lyndon's impact on the sport extended far beyond the finish line.

Through his expertise, innovation and tireless commitment, he played a pivotal role in the development and operation of BMX racing timing, scoring and event management systems that became a cornerstone of Australian and overseas events.

That creation was BEM - BMX Event Manager, launched in 1999 and developed in a volunteer capacity thanks to the support of BMX clubs that used the program.

Our thoughts and commiserations are with Lyndon's family.
