Ride Report - Acheron Way, 56km - 600m.
A generation of cyclists have been introduced to some of the best riding in Victoria via the Giro della Donna, a 125km ride that takes in some stunning high-country sights with more than a few challenging climbs. If you're keen to stay off the roads and avoid the worst of the climbs, then this hidden gem is for you. The 56km out & back ride follows a narrow road that is sealed for about two thirds of its length and takes in magnificent tall timbers, ferns, crystal clear streams and if you're lucky, lyre birds (we saw 2 on the trip). Over the course of the ride, we saw only 3 cars and two other riders on a mid-week trip. I've run into a few interstate riders of late who are spending a couple of weeks in Vic doing some rail trails including the Great Vic, and the Great Southern rail trails. I think this would be an excellent addition to any itinerary particularly as you can include the magnificent Lilydale - Warburton trail. You could pack a small backpack, ride from Lilydale to Warburton, stay overnight, tackle Acheron Way the next day, stay overnight again in Warby, and then return to Lilydale. Full Disclosure - This route would entail riding halfway up Mount Donna Buang to meet the intersection of Acheron Way. The other option is to drive to the intersection Acheron Way with the Narbethong - Maysville Road and ride out & back. It is a steady 20km climb of 1-4% followed by a gravelly and pot holed descent of 8km to get to the turnaround point. It's not difficult, but it would be a cinch on an e-Bike.
