THE DETONATORS were formed in Melbourne way back in August 1997 – that’s 29 years of bar room blues this year. The hard working quartet have never been afraid to hit the road, haul some kilometres and rack up a heap of gigs. They believe they have easily done more than 3000 gigs since they first formed, are a hugely popular returning feature act at MBAS House of Blues. With a swag of album releases and a published book under their belts, The Detonators have enjoyed both notoriety and celebrated success and awards over their time – including most recently, guitarist PAULIE BIGNELL being voted “People’s Choice Blues Legend Award” at the 2024 Blues Music Victoria Awards.

'The Dets’ original music, to which all members contribute, is best described as a lethal combination of early blues with a sprinkling of rockabilly and early rock n roll thrown in. The band features bespectacled ROCKBOTTOM JAMES on vocals and electric harmonica, PAULIE BIGNELL on hollow body guitar, DOGHOUSE DAVE on slapping double bass with EDDIE FURY on sticks and skins duty.

NICK CHARLES has long been recognized as “Australia’s virtuoso of acoustic roots and blues” – as first quoted decades ago in a review by The Age. In the intervening years, Nick has amassed dozens of prestigious music awards in regignition of his sublime talent as a musician, songwriter and performing artist. The legend has grown with every US tour, now totalling 13, and every new acclaimed album – now more than 20. Locally, Nick has headlined at most Australian blues, folk and jazz festivals including 25 times at Port Fairy, and multiple appearances at many others.

Still riding high from an outstanding success in 2025 at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis USA, where his world class talent placed him in the Top 5 worldwide in the IBC Final in the Solo/Duo Category. Nick was also honoured at the IBC with being presented with the Best Solo/Duo Guitarist Award. Huge achievements on an international stage from a staggeringly large competitive field, further highlight Nick’s standing. At a time in life where others are considering retirement, Nick Charles is still in demand, winning new fans, kicking higher goals and performing at his peak.

Classic blues and country fingerstyle underpins a vast repertoire, but the influences are diverse. They range from his ragtime guitar heroes Big Bill, Blind Blake and of course Robert Johnson but include obvious references to players as eclectic as Doc Watson, Merle Travis and the modern school of John Fahey, Leo Kottke and even the English icons Bert Jansch and others. Along the way you will hear a lifetime’s stories and songs from a vast career. A superb time is guaranteed for lovers of fine acoustic music!
