DAY 13:
But now it was time to party...
After the intensity of the Evolution performance and the formalities of the presentation, the Dream Team was directed back towards our table, where once again, philoxenia took over the evening.
Upon finding our table, emotions took over yet again...
There was no elaborate sign.
No printed banner.
No branding.
Just a simple piece of masking-tape, with handwritten bold letters:
"AUSTRALIA"
I cannot properly explain what that moment felt like.
There it was.
One word.
Yet somehow, it embodied everything we were.
Everything we represented.
Everything that had brought us thousands of kilometres from Melbourne to this tiny village outside Larissa.
"AUSTRALIA"
That was where we had come from.
That was where MANASIS had built its story.
That was where our dancers had been raised, trained and educated in Greek culture.
That was where generations of our families had built lives after leaving Greece.
It was overwhelming.
We sat down, ate, drank, talked.
We were approached by locals who took a genuine interest in our Dream Team, our journey and the story behind our return.
Succulent chicken skewers, cooked to perfection over a charcoal grill, began arriving at the table, accompanied by drinks, desserts and that unmistakable warmth which had characterised every moment of our return to Armenio.
But the food was only the beginning.
Inevitably, the music took over.
With an incredible group of musicians providing the soundtrack, the evening quickly transformed into a traditional Greek glendi that would continue well into the early hours of the morning. And this was certainly not a limited regional repertoire. Through their extraordinary musicianship and seemingly endless knowledge of Greek music, we travelled across the country- from the dances and sounds of the Larissa region to traditions from almost every corner of Greece.
Leading the musicians was clarinettist Dedousis Konstantinos , together with his exceptional live band, whose playing would keep the circle alive for hours.
It was during these hours that the people of Armenio began to discover something about the Dream Team that could not necessarily be seen during a formal stage performance.
They were not simply a polished troupe trained to reproduce a series of pre-arranged choreographic sequences.
They were dancers who understood Greek dance.
The knowledge carried within that group extended far beyond what had been rehearsed for the stage. One dance would lead naturally to another, then another, and another, with members of the Dream Team recognising regional rhythms, formations and sequences and stepping effortlessly into the circle.
What they demonstrated throughout the night was not choreography being performed.
It was cultural knowledge being lived.
And this is where the beauty of the panigiri reveals itself.
It is not scripted.
It is not a production.
It is not predetermined.
There is no choreographer standing at the side directing what happens next. There is simply a connection between the dancers as a collective, their connection with the musicians, and their shared understanding of the traditions being expressed.
It is felt rather than explained.
The musicians play.
The dancers respond.
The energy moves around the circle.
And somehow, without anyone needing to say what comes next, everyone knows.
So we danced.
For hours.
As a team. As a community. As a family.
Our original “Famous 15” remembered leaving Armenio in 2024 with one overwhelming feeling- we simply did not want the night to end.
Two years later, it was even harder for our Dream Team to say goodbye.
This time, the connection had deepened. What had begun as a warm welcome in 2024 had developed into something more enduring. There was hospitality, certainly, but there was also genuine care, genuine interest and a connection that extended well beyond the boundaries of a performance or a single evening.
These were relationships we did not want to simply walk away from.
And, in a way, we didn't.
Eventually, the time came when we had to leave. The bus would depart, the village would gradually return to its quieter rhythm, and our journey would continue towards the next destination.
But the connections remained.
Many of the friendships formed in Armenio continue through social media, conversations and messages across the distance that separates Australia and Greece. The physical distance may be considerable, but the relationships created through moments like these have a way of making that distance feel considerably smaller.
Perhaps that is one of the greatest gifts of DESTINATION PATRIDA.
We may have to leave the village, but we do not necessarily leave the people behind.
And so, as we finally farewelled Armenio, we did so with the hope that this would not be our last embrace with this beautiful community. We eagerly anticipate the day when another DESTINATION PATRIDA Tour brings us back to the heartland of Larissa, back to the square, back to the music, and back to the wonderful people who have now become such an important part of our journey.
Armenio had welcomed us twice.
We already knew we wanted to return a third time.
For some of our Dream Team, inspired by the philoxenia, glendi, and atmosphere, the party continued on our bus.
For others, it was an absolute 'burn-out moment'. Just shy of half-way through the entire Tour managing, coordinating and delivering endless components finally caught up, and a few quick hours of rest were undoubtedly required. Some of the most significant components of the Tour were about to come, and we were eagerly anticipating the opportunities.
We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to former student Maria Hatzilada and her family for the original proposal and introduction to local dance instructor Μιχαλης Τσακνακης , who subsequently extended the invitation and created the opportunity for MANASIS to participate in this special event as part of our 2026 Greece Tour.
We would also like to acknowledge members of our extended network who happened to be holidaying in Greece and made the effort to travel to Armenio specifically to support our team — Kon and Helen Elizabeth Natsioulas and their families. Their presence was another unexpected reminder that although we had travelled from Australia, we were never truly travelling alone.
And finally, our sincere thanks to the wonderful members and volunteers of Μ.Ε.Σ Αρμενίου Άνθιμος Γαζής for their hospitality, their philoxenia and the warmth with which they welcomed the Dream Team, together with all of the participating organisations, instructors and dancers who shared the evening with us and made our team feel genuinely appreciated and valued.
