Sauna & mental health

We often talk about sauna as something that feels good in the body. But there’s another reason we keep coming back to it: how it can make us feel in the mind.

Research has found associations between regular sauna bathing and better mental wellbeing, including lower levels of anxiety and depression. Heat exposure may affect the nervous system and stress response, and may contribute to the release of endorphins — creating that familiar feeling of calm that can linger after you leave the sauna.

But perhaps part of the magic is simpler.

You sit down.
You stop scrolling.
You breathe.
You sweat.
You step outside into the cool air.
For a little while, there is nowhere else to be.

Sauna isn’t a replacement for therapy, medication or professional mental-health care. But it can be a simple ritual of rest — a regular space to slow down, reconnect with your body and spend time with other people.

Sometimes feeling better starts with simply giving yourself permission to pause.

Heat. Cold. Breath. Nature. Connection.

A little less doing.
A little more being.

What keeps our sauna warm starts long before the fire is lit.

We harvest the hardwood we use in our sauna here in Megalong Valley, from the land where we live. We use trees that have fallen naturally in winds and storms, as well as timber from thinning — selectively removing some trees to allow the remaining forest to grow more strongly.

Rather than letting this timber go to waste, we give it another life — as fire, heat and steam in our sauna.

There’s something special about knowing exactly where your firewood comes from, and being connected to the land that provides it.

From forest to fire to sauna.
