🥋 Is my child ready for grading?

This is a question I’ve been asked a few times recently.

And sometimes the answer is:
Not yet.

At Australian Wing Chun Academy, we do things a little differently.
Most martial arts schools give kids a white belt when they start. We don't.

Our kids start at Grade 0, and they have to earn their first white sash — Grade 1.

Even that first grade requires more than simply turning up for a certain amount of time.

We look at the whole picture:
🥋 Attendance — Are they training consistently?
🥋 Behaviour — Are they respectful and well behaved?
🥋 Listening — Do they do what they're asked in class?
🥋 Practice — Are they actually practising their skills?
🥋 Progress — Are they learning and improving?

Time served is part of the process, but it doesn't automatically mean you're ready to grade.

Life happens. Kids get sick, families go on holidays and school gets busy. We understand that.

But if a student hasn't been training regularly, or isn't demonstrating the behaviour, effort and skills we expect, they may simply need more time.

That's not punishment. It's part of earning your grade.
I want every student to stand up for their grading knowing:
“I earned this.”
Because that first white sash should mean something.
And every grade after it should be earned too. 🥋

Don’t let your kids become part of this statistic!

🥋 Get them into martial arts!

Martial arts teaches discipline, builds confidence, develops focus and gives kids a positive way to stay active — while helping them spend less time glued to screens.

Give them something that challenges their body, develops their mind and builds skills they can carry with them for life.
