Wat Khemarak Ratanaram Dance Group

On Saturday the 7th, we were invited to Chin New Year at Marsden SHS to represent our Khmer culture to share the story of Robam Nesat (Fishing dance). We are so honored to share our experiences with these lovely people and it was an amazing event to celebrate.

What is Robam Nesat? (Fishing Dance)

This robam is described as a daily life of Khmer farmers and fishermen, who dance with traditional bamboo fishing equipment such as Ang Rut and Chhneang.

In this dance, you see two traditional methods of catching fish that they used of braided bamboo baskets called Chhneang and bell-shaped traps are known locally as Ang Rut. Young women scoop water from the river into their Chhneang which they represent as strainers.

Also in this robam has love and romance which is also the favourite theme in Khmer stories and dances.

At the beginning of the dance, young men come down to the river on one side and women on the other. The dance expresses their joy, happiness and excited they are when they meet each other. As they fish, they flirt with each other. The boys playfully sn**ch the girl’s fishing baskets and they make merry (cheerful and lively actions)

During the dance, the group would have split leaving one young couple behind and they fell in love. At the end of the dance, the group returns to tease and congratulate the couple.

We are so honored to perform World's Culture Logan at Kingston Butter Factory to represent Wat Khemarak Ratanarak and also represent our Khmer culture in front of thousands of people.

Throwback to 72nd Zomi National Day 2020 ❤️❤️❤️

Hello everyone! Hope you have all been doing well.

It has only been 3 months into 2023 and we have had a great start to the New Year. Just in the last week, we have had the pleasure of being invited to showcase our performances for two very special events.

On Thursday 16th of February 2023, for the very first time, we performed at Marsden State High School for their Asian Cultural Night featuring other cultural groups such as Chinese, Japanese, Burmese + many more. It was a fantastic night full of singing and dancing.
For the second time after performing back in 2020, we got the gracious invite from our very good friends to come back again and perform for their 75th Zomi National Day celebration on Monday 20th of February 2023. We are always so honoured to be a part of such a significant day and hope to be invited again next year!

Jumping back to the present, we are currently working really hard every week preparing for the biggest event of the year - Khmer New Year 2023 this April 14-16th. In saying that, we are encouraging more people to join our community so if you are interested, please come along to the Khmer temple in Marsden (44 Third Ave, Marsden 4132) on Sunday 12th March 2023 at 1:30pm. We look forward to welcoming new talents!! We do not discriminate on gender, race or age.
