Michael and his group of divers are on their way to Palau this morning, and Shelly Beach was looking just as good from the sky as it does from the water!

It’s a beautiful start to Saturday here in Manly, with a cracking sunrise, light westerlies and Shelly looking glassy and flat as a pancake. Yesterday delivered around 5 to 6 metres of visibility in the bay, with plenty of our local favourites out and about. Port Jackson sharks are still everywhere, joined by giant cuttlefish, fiddler rays, blue gropers, wobbegongs, gloomy octopus, dusky flathead and plenty of schooling fish moving through the bay.

It’s a busy one for the team today. Jess is taking a group through their PADI Open Water course, while Daz is out with our Advanced Open Water Students. Matt and Cam are down at Shelly beach with our Double Guided Shore Dive before both heading back in this afternoon for Discover Scuba Dives.

It’s a beautiful sunny morning here in Manly. The birds are chirping, the water is calling and, dare we say it, it’s starting to feel a little like spring.

Shelly Beach has been settling nicely after the midweek rain and is looking like it’s getting itself ready for the weekend. The westerly winds are helping to clear things up, and yesterday Emily and her snorkel group enjoyed around 5 metres of visibility.

There was plenty to see underwater too, including Port Jackson sharks, Basil the turtle, fiddler rays and schools of scad and yellowtail barracuda.

Today, Matt has headed down to the beach with a group for our Double Guided Shore Dive, before jumping back in again this afternoon to introduce some lovely guests to the underwater world on a Discover Scuba Dive.

We’ve got a fun filled weekend ahead, and there are still a couple of opportunities to get in the water. There are just two spots left on tomorrow’s Double Guided Shore Dive, and if you’re feeling a little rusty and need a refresher before getting back underwater, there’s still space for that too.
With the sunshine out, improving conditions and the weekend just around the corner, it sounds like a pretty good excuse to go diving.

5 things you might see on your night dive in Sydney 🌙🤿

🐙 Octopus
Masters of camouflage and seriously fascinating to watch, octopus are often out hunting and exploring once the sun goes down.

🦑 Pyjama squid
Small, distinctive and a great night dive find. Keep your eyes open for their striking striped pattern as they move across the bottom.

🐌 Bubble snail
These tiny critters are easy to overlook, but a torch can reveal all sorts of little creatures moving around the reef after dark.

🦈 Wobbegong shark
Sydney’s wobbegongs are generally pretty relaxed and can often be found resting on the bottom. Seeing one illuminated by your torch is always a memorable encounter.

🐠Pipefish
Small, slender and surprisingly well camouflaged, pipefish can be tricky to spot. Slow down, shine your torch carefully and you might find one tucked amongst the vegetation.

That’s the magic of night diving. You never quite know what’s going to swim, crawl or wriggle into the beam of your torch.

The marine mammals had their moment last week, but this week the sharks have taken centre stage, with plenty of Sydney’s most characterful and unique species making an appearance.

The highlight? A wobbegong having a very impressive meal, tucking into a Port Jackson shark right in front of the divers. Not something you see every day! And that’s not all. There were Port Jacksons cruising around, a grey nurse shark and even an angel shark making an appearance too.

There’s a little more water movement than yesterday, but conditions are still looking good following Shelly Beach’s delightful 10 meters yesterday morning.

It’s an early riser this morning if you’re heading to Shelly Beach! With a southerly swell and a mild northerly breeze, Shelly is our pick for a morning bubble blowing session. If you slept through the alarm and are jumping in this afternoon, head harbour side as the northerlies are set to increase.

We had a spectacular day of diving yesterday, jumping in at both Shelly Beach and Freshwater. Visibility was 10m+ at both sites, with wobbegongs, Port Jackson sharks, giant cuttlefish, schools of yellowtail scad, green sea turtles and fiddler rays galore! Not a bad day to be underwater in Sydney!

We’re back at it today hoping for much of the same. Jess and Matt are heading down to Shelly Beach this morning on a Double Guided Shore Dive and Scuba Refresher, before Jess swaps the tank for a snorkel this afternoon for a Snorkel Safari!

The sun’s out (for now!), the westerlies are blowing, and Manly is looking every bit worthy of its ‘best beach’ bragging rights this morning. Simply stunning!

We’ve got westerly winds this morning before they swing around to the northeast later today, so we’re making the most of the conditions and heading to Shelly Beach for our Double Guided Shore Dives, PADI Open Water courses and Refresher Dives.

Yesterday saw plenty of our usual underwater locals out and about, including mating Port Jackson sharks, cruising wobbegongs, juvenile boxfish, a huge school of diamondfish, and plenty of smaller critters hiding amongst the rocks.

El also had an epic dive down at Bushrangers Bay, with a whopping 15m viz, plenty of Grey Nurse Sharks, an eagle ray and a purple dragon. Definitely worth the drive!

Shelly Beach is looking more like a lake this morning, with beautifully calm conditions and plenty happening beneath the surface.

This morning’s visibility reports are at 8 metres through the bay, improving as you headed around the point. And honestly, if you’re not seeing Port Jackson sharks this weekend, you might be diving with your eyes shut. They are everywhere at the moment. Add in giant cuttlefish, fiddler rays, blue gropers, banded shrimp, dusky flathead, wobbegongs and octopus, and there is a ridiculous amount to see right now.

El was up before the sun this morning, making her way down to Bushrangers Bay with a group of divers in search of her favourite animal in the world, the Grey Nurse Shark. Back in Manly, Matt is in the pool with a fresh batch of PADI Open Water students, while Ollie and Jess are out at Shelly Beach running a Scuba Refresher and Double Guided Shore Dive. This afternoon, they’re straight back into it with a Snorkel Safari and Discover Scuba Dive.

The mums are now making their way back south, showing off their playful new calves, and we’re heading away to try and see them!
