THE DIAPHRAGM BREATHING 03/09/2025

Breathing is vital for back health because breathing muscles attach to the spine, deep breathing mobilizes the spine by moving the ribs, improved oxygenation reduces back stiffness, and controlled breathing strengthens core muscles for better spinal stability and posture. Improper breathing can strain back muscles, and mindful breathing can reduce stress, positively impacting your back. Deep breathing exercises can increase the movement of your rib cage, which mobilizes the joints of your thoracic (mid) spine, reducing stiffness.

THE DIAPHRAGM BREATHING The diaphragm is the backbone of your ability to breathe. It is located just below your lungs, and when relaxed, it has a shape of a dome. However, as soon a...

Comment ‘Watch’ and I’ll personally DM you the full conversation!

Most people don’t think about their feet until something goes wrong.

But today’s guest, Dr Courtney Conley, says that by the time you’re injured - it’s already too late?

Dr Courtney is an internationally renowned chiropractor who specialises in foot and gait mechanics (the way a person walks/runs).

Courtney’s mission is to ensure that as many as possible people get to enjoy the physical, mental and emotional benefits of walking.

She says 1 in 4 adults will fall and after the age of 50, your foot strength declines by 35%.

And yet… we still prioritise how shoes look, not what they do.

So in today’s conversation, we cover:

- Why most foot pain doesn’t come from your feet?
- Why modern footwear is making you weaker?!
- The simple toe exercises that can prevent life-threatening falls.
- How to choose the right shoes (and what to avoid)?
- Why walking is the most powerful form of medicine we all have access to…

And more.

This conversation will give you more than just better feet, it will give you a better relationship with your body.

When I discovered her work, it was a game changer for my foot health and also just from this conversation today, it feels like I now have a better understanding of how what I thought was largely irrelevant is having a big downstream impact on a bunch of things in the long run that I really, really care about.

The advice she gives is something that you can take on a daily basis to prevent finding yourself in a situation where you hurt yourself or lose mobility all because you have something wrong with your foundations.

Hopefully next time we see each other @gaithappens, I’ll have the strongest feet you’ve ever seen!

We’re biased but that big toe might be the most important joint in the human body.

Whether you are looking to decrease pain or improve performance, this is the one thing you may be missing:

Fun facts:
	1.	It takes on the majority of load when we push off the foot when we run and walk.
	2.	It has to be mobile AND stable.
	3.	Restrictions in this joint can not only cause pain in the big toe but can also result in pain in other areas of the foot (lesser toes), ankle, knee, and low back.
	4.	We should have about 40-45 degrees of range of motion in that toe for walking gait efficiency. We need more for running and sprinting.
	5.	The best athletes have the strongest feet. “The MTPj  (big toe)/first ray complex) deserves consideration in sprint training: Improved 50 m Sprint Time Performance following an 8-week toe flexion strength protocol

Drill:
	1.	Stretch the big toe, driving the ball the big toe down as you lift the toe. Hold for 1 minute.
	2.	Press the toe into your fingers for 5 seconds, pull the big toe off of your fingers for 5 seconds, repeat 5x
	3.	Drive it home with a step forward while the big toe is extended. You can use a wedge from @moboboard , a washcloth if your range is a little less.

**no pinching on the top of the big toe, often times that pinching will decrease btw if you drive the ball of the big toe down***

Mobilize and then LOAD. More coming later!
