Tigers at ATV State Sparring Championships
Congratulations to our team of 5 Tigers students who competed last Sunday at the ATV State Sparring Team Selection Championships, at the State Netball and Hockey Centre in Parkville. Our small team came away with 2 Gold, 2 Silver and 2 Bronze medals!
Liam had already qualified for an uncontested gold, but through our Master Gary ATV had managed to arrange a "demo" match which unfortunately fell through after a long wait for Liam, who was looking sharp in training and whilst warming up. Kyra had a bye and had a long wait for her first ever state championship match in the semifinal. Her opponent's experience prevailed, although Kyra fought through both rounds without stopping once, she lost on points, earning a bronze medal.
Brandon gave it everything he had across all four rounds of both matches, earning a bronze in his division and a silver in a second "demo" match. These were Brandon's first real head kick matches, and he did well to avoid some serious kicks! Bruce played two great matches also in head kicks, scoring with spinning hook kicks, crescent kicks and roundhouse kicks to his opponents helmet. A very exciting final match saw Bruce nearly close the gap, but coming away with a very respectable silver. Brad also had a "bye" through to his final, and after a convincing first round win had a much closer second round but came away with the Gold medal - a great effort!
Well done all and especially to our three sparring competitors who have qualified for the state team if they wish to compete at the nationals in Canberra in October!
