Bilge pump replacement and re-wired non working lights

A little tidy-up and improvement to this boat’s cabling.

I secured and routed the cabling, cleaned up the connections and added protection where needed, giving everything a much neater finish.

Customer bought a boat and wasn’t getting a good bottom reading when underway…

Took a look and found the transducer bracket had been mounted upside down, with a extension plate being used to get the extra reach.

Not exactly the ideal setup, especially when you’re relying on your sounder to read properly at speed.

So we did what needed to be done, sorted the mounting and got the transducer sitting where it should be.

Now she’ll read the bottom properly when underway.

Sometimes the problem isn’t the sounder settings… rather how the transducer is mounted.

Some work done on a 7m Yellow Fin. Corrosion removed, aluminium wash to etch, treated and sealed. Placed a HDPE protection piece for anchor chain whip not to further damaged the paint and seperate the stainless from Aluminium. Drilled and taped all bolt holes finishing it off with counter sunk bolts, Tef gel applied to prevent further issues. Also installed and splash guard over the 1Kw transducer, refit and correctly positioning the transducer as it wasn’t performing as it should.

Another 1kW transducer installation completed successfully this week.

I also carried out some fault finding on the customer’s battery distribution system after noticing charging issues.

The issue was traced to a faulty Voltage Sensitive Relay (VSR), which was not switching correctly to charge the house battery. Unfortunately, this left the house battery in a critically low state.

* ✔️ Diagnosed the faulty VSR.
* ✔️ Charged all batteries to restore the system.
* ✔️ Confirmed the VSR requires replacement.
* ✔️ The VSR will be replaced under warranty by the previous installer.

Sometimes a job uncovers more than what was originally booked for, but identifying these issues before they become bigger problems is all part of providing reliable marine electrical service.

I recently had the pleasure of working on this impressive 8m Surtees Hardtop Plate Aluminium Boat in Yeppoon.

The job included:
- New 1Kw transducer mounted and repositioned
existing Garmin transducer for more accurate
sounding
- Sounders updated & tested
- Bilge pump auto float switch installation
- Sacrificial anodes added to protect the boat from
electrolysis
