๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ SYDNEY MARATHON โ€” MY TURN! ๐Ÿ’š

As promised, here are my questions and answers!

My first Major and Iโ€™m so excited that it gets to be Sydney. What a city, what a course and what an experience this is going to be! ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ

A massive thank you to everyone who has helped me get to the start line โ€” especially everyone who has kept me company on training runs, listened to the marathon chat and shared some kilometres with me along the way. ๐Ÿ’š

A special thank you to Mark at Formotion Physio and Jono at Chirogenex Chiro for helping keep the body moving and getting me ready to run!

Iโ€™m genuinely excited for this one.

Iโ€™ve discovered that training for a road marathon is a very different challenge to the trails โ€” and in some ways, tougher! But Iโ€™ve absolutely loved getting back to running faster, chasing some pace and seeing what I can do.

The training is done. Nothing more to add now.

Time to enjoy it.

Sydney Marathonโ€ฆ here we go! ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Bring on that finish line! ๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ SYDNEY MARATHON โ€” GO LINZI! ๐Ÿ’š

This Sunday, Linzi will line up for her very first marathon, and Iโ€™ve absolutely loved working with her specifically towards this event.

Coming from a CrossFit background, Linzi loves her weightlifting and didnโ€™t have a huge amount of running experience when we started. But what she did bring was dedication, adaptability and an incredible training ethic. Linzi puts the hard work in โ€” and this training block has shown exactly what she is capable of.

Along the way she has:
๐Ÿ… Run her first half marathon race
๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ Taken on 5km and 10km races
โšก Set new PBs
๐Ÿ’ช Built herself from a CrossFitter who โ€œdidnโ€™t really runโ€ into someone about to stand on a marathon start line!

Unfortunately, we hit a setback towards the end of the training block, which meant we had to get a little creative over the final few weeks to maintain her fitness and get her to the start line ready to go.

But the important work had already been done. She put the training in.

And now here we are โ€” 42.2km waiting for her on Sunday!

We only managed to get one run together during this training block, but I really hope this marathon isnโ€™t the end of Linziโ€™s running journey. Hopefully there are plenty more runs together in the future.

Linzi, I know just how happy youโ€™re going to be when you see that finish line on Sunday.

Youโ€™ve earned this experience. Enjoy it, soak it all in and, most importantlyโ€ฆ

KEEP SMILING! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ’š

Go Linzi! Itโ€™s been an absolute pleasure coaching you for this one. ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ…

๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ SYDNEY MARATHON WEEKEND โ€” MEET MATT ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ

This weekend I have two athletes heading to Sydney to take on the Sydney Marathon, and I couldnโ€™t be more excited to see them get to that start line.

First up is Matt, who Iโ€™ve had the pleasure of coaching for more than two years. This will be the third major event weโ€™ve worked towards together.

This training block started off like an absolute dream. Everything was going smoothly and, geez, he was getting quick! ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Then we hit a pretty significant speed bump.

Some unexpected health complications meant that suddenly running a marathon wasnโ€™t simply about whether his legs were ready. There have been some very real conversations about whether getting to the start line was the right thing to do.

But if there is one thing Iโ€™ve learnt from coaching Matt, itโ€™s that he is incredibly determined.

What he has continued to achieve despite everything that has been thrown his way is pretty remarkable. Sometimes success in running isnโ€™t about PBs, perfect training blocks or hitting every session on the program.

Sometimes getting to the start line is the achievement. ๐Ÿ’š

Ahead of Sydney, we asked Matt a few questions about his training, the marathon and what keeps him going.

Have a read below ๐Ÿ‘‡

Matt, Iโ€™m wishing you an incredible day out there. Run smart, soak up the atmosphere and enjoy every kilometre.

Whatever that finish-line clock says, getting yourself there after everything this training block has thrown at you is already something to be incredibly proud of.

Good luck, Matt! Sydney is waiting. ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ’š

WHAT ACTUALLY GETS SOMEONE MARATHON READY? ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Itโ€™s not one 32km long run.

Itโ€™s not one massive training week.

And itโ€™s definitely not one magical workout.

Research into recreational marathon runners shows that marathon performance is influenced by a combination of training variables.

Some of the big ones:

๐Ÿƒ CONSISTENT WEEKLY RUNNING VOLUME
More consistent running volume is associated with better marathon performance.

๐Ÿ“… TRAINING FREQUENCY
How regularly you run matters. Faster recreational marathon runners tend to train more frequently โ€” not simply cram kilometres into one or two huge sessions.

โฑ๏ธ THE SPEEDS YOU CAN SUSTAIN
Your aerobic and threshold running ability are strongly related to marathon performance.

๐Ÿ›ฃ๏ธ LONG-RUN PREPARATION
Long runs matter โ€” but they are only one piece of the puzzle. Research has found longer endurance runs and greater weekly volume are associated with faster marathon times and less slowing during the race.

๐Ÿ“ˆ TRAINING HISTORY
Months and years of consistent running build something that a 12-week crash program simply cannot replicate.

And then there are the variables that are harder to put into a training spreadsheet:

โœ… Staying healthy enough to train
โœ… Recovering between sessions
โœ… Pacing appropriately
โœ… Fuelling and hydrating properly
โœ… Being consistent when motivation isnโ€™t perfect

The marathon rewards consistency more than hero sessions.

You donโ€™t need every week to be perfect.

You need enough good weeks stacked together that your body is genuinely prepared for 42.2km.

TRAIN FOR THE MARATHON โ€” NOT JUST THE LONG RUN.

A huge well done to Cheryl and Sean both completing the long course Larapinta multi day race ๐Ÿ’š both put the training in strength, running and stair climbing to finish this magnificent race. They even had to contend with deep river crossings this year. Well done to you both it was a pleasure working with you ๐Ÿ’š

Tuesday intervals ๐Ÿ’š 1600m, 1200m, 800m, 400m, easy 2km
