𝑻𝒂𝒔𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑻𝒂𝒍𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑺𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒔 𝒂𝒕 𝑳𝒂𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒆 𝑶’𝑵𝒆𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒆𝒓 𝑾𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑪𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒊𝒄 𝒊𝒏 𝑺𝒐𝒖𝒕𝒉 𝑨𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒂

The H***y Tonk Arena in South Australia played host to an exciting and highly productive steer wrestling clinic on 22–23 May 2026, led by Lachlan “Lachie” O’Neill. A former Australian Steer Wrestling Champion and currently ranked 10th in the national standings, O’Neill brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to the two-day event, attracting participants eager to sharpen their skills in Rodeo’s Ironman event.

Organised by the Festival State Rodeo Circuit, the clinic catered to a broad range of competitors from beginners taking their first steps into steer wrestling, through to more experienced “bulldoggers” looking to refine their technique.

Among those in attendance were Tasmanian cowboys Gene Marshall and Dylan Barker, who made the trip across Bass Strait to take advantage of the elite instruction. Their participation highlights the growing commitment within Tasmania to develop talent in the steer wrestling event.

A standout moment of the clinic came with the recognition of Dylan Barker as the “Most Improved Participant of the Day.” This award reflects not only Barker’s dedication and rapid progress over the course of the clinic, but also his broader contribution to the rodeo community. An up-and-coming steer wrestler, Barker previously competed in second division bull riding before turning his focus to steer wrestling. Beyond competing, he has played a significant role behind the scenes as a major sponsor of numerous rodeo events through his business, Barker Roofing. His achievement at the clinic marks an encouraging step forward in his transition to the steer wrestling event.

Fellow Tasmanian attendee Gene Marshall continues to be a key figure in fostering the sport locally. Alongside his family, Marshall has been hosting a series of practice days at their arena in North Motton, providing valuable opportunities for riders and aspiring steer wrestlers to train and develop their skills. These sessions have been strongly supported by Tasmanian Champion Steer Wrestler Luke Hamilton, whose experience and guidance have been instrumental in building confidence and competence among participants.

Anyone in Tasmania interested in getting involved in steer wrestling or attending upcoming practice days is encouraged to reach out and take part. With passionate individuals and growing support networks in place, the future of steer wrestling in the state looks brighter than ever.

𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 is a farm management practice that involves removing and redistributing nutrient-rich waste from effluent ponds—typically found on dairy farms—and applying it to pastureland to improve soil health and crop growth.

Effluent ponds collect liquid waste from dairy sheds, including manure, urine, wash-down water, and other organic materials. Over time, these ponds fill up and require cleaning to maintain capacity and prevent environmental issues.

𝐂𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐬:
Pumping out the effluent using specialized equipment.
Transporting and spreading it across paddocks in a controlled manner.

Effluent spreading is the process of applying the cleaned effluent to pasture or crop land. It’s done using irrigation systems or spreaders that ensure even distribution.
