Before you buy, it's important to understand the new NSW safety requirements for e-bikes and lithium-ion batteries.

Since February 2025, NSW has introduced new safety standards for e-bikes, batteries and chargers sold in the state. These rules are compulsory and designed to reduce the risk of battery fires and improve consumer safety.

When choosing an e-bike, consumers should look for:

✅ Products that comply with NSW safety requirements

✅ Approval certificates for bikes, batteries and chargers

✅ Proper labelling with certificate number etc

✅ Clear safety instructions for charging, storage and use

Buying non-compliant products may expose riders and their families to unnecessary safety risks, including battery fires and electrical faults. The police will seize and destroy the illegal bike and fine the rider. NSW Fair Trading has introduced significant penalties for businesses supplying non-compliant products.

Before purchasing any e-bike, ask the seller:

• Is the bike certified for sale in NSW?

• Is the battery approved and tested?

• Does it include compliant charging equipment?

• Can the seller provide evidence of certification?
