That is 2:57 per kilometer, or 4:45 per mile, held for the whole distance. It takes 1:24 off the record and makes it the fastest marathon ever run on Australian soil.

He was second here last year in 2:06:16, behind Hailemaryam Kiros, who set the record Gobena just broke.

Paul Taranto completes the Sydney Marathon in 5:17.24, with Rachel Horsham a couple of hours ahead in 3:15.57.
