🧊 The GLP-1 iceberg.
⬆️ Above the waterline, the benefits are well documented and genuinely significant. Rapid weight loss, improved blood pressure, better blood sugar regulation, reduced cravings, and lower cardiovascular risk. For many patients these medications work exactly as intended.
⬇️ Below the waterline sits everything that simply doesn't announce itself. Shifts in ferritin, B12, vitamin D, zinc and magnesium. Changes in lean muscle mass and grip strength. Bile flow, bone density, menstrual cycles, and oral medication absorption.
👁️ None of this makes GLP-1s a problem. It makes them a medication worth monitoring properly, like any other. The challenge is that these changes are largely invisible. They don't present as symptoms patients think to raise, and they don't appear on the scales, which is usually the number everyone is watching.
🎯 Rapid weight loss of any kind carries nutritional and body composition considerations. That's not a reason for concern, it's a reason for baseline and interval testing so you can support the patient properly while the medication does its job.
🧪 Iron studies, B12, vitamin D, zinc, magnesium, thyroid function and body composition give you the visibility to catch shifts early and adjust, rather than discovering them months down the track.
