YEP, I SAID IT.
There’s a high probability you can’t just “release” a real front choke with some fancy technique.
Think about the reality for a second.
An attacker choking someone with both hands is usually bigger, stronger, highly aggressive and has completely lost their s**t. And statistically, who is very often on the receiving end of that strength difference? A woman.
Yet online we keep seeing neat little wrist plucks, elbow tricks and technical releases performed on compliant partners who aren’t actually trying to choke anyone.
That’s not reality.
And even if you manage to peel their hands off… then what?
They’re still standing right in front of you, angry, aggressive and ready to keep attacking.
Sometimes the answer to the problem isn’t where the problem is.
When someone has both hands committed to your throat, vulnerable targets are exposed. In a genuine violent assault, your best chance may be immediate, aggressive action to those vulnerable areas to disrupt the attacker, create an opportunity and get out.
Violence isn’t pretty. Your response doesn’t need to look pretty either.
Be careful what you believe online just because it looks technical, clever or cool.
Ask the only question that matters:
Would this still work if the other person was genuinely trying to hurt me?

🎥 WATCH THE VIDEO FOR REALITY.
Stop judging techniques by how fancy you think they look.
Start asking the only question that matters:
Would this still work if the other person was actually trying to hurt me, was actually doing it with real power, real aggression and they are much bigger?
Because that’s where so much online self defence falls apart.
The clever wrist grab.
The perfect little spin.
The fancy choke release performed on a compliant mate who knows exactly what’s coming.
Looks great on camera.
But real violence doesn’t cooperate.
⚠️ VIOLENCE ISN’T FANCY.
⚠️ VIOLENCE LOOKS VIOLENT.
A real attacker squeezes harder. Pulls. Moves. Strikes. Resists. Fights back.
So your response has to work under pressure, aggression, resistance and chaos, not choreography.
👊 Protect yourself.
👊 React hard.
👊 Attack what’s vulnerable.
👊 Create the opportunity to escape.
Real self defence isn’t about looking impressive.
It’s about giving yourself the best possible chance when things become ugly, fast and unpredictable.

🔥 ONE DECISION CAN CHANGE EVERYTHING.
We know taking that first step can feel hard.
Walking into somewhere new.
Training with strangers.
Admitting you want to feel stronger, safer, more confident.
But you know what’s harder?
❌ Staying stuck.
❌ Staying scared.
❌ Staying unsure of yourself.
❌ Spending your one shot on this planet feeling, trapped, scared & settling for mediocre.

KMAA isn’t just about learning how to punch, kick or defend yourself.
It’s about learning to stay calm under pressure, trust yourself, make decisions, handle chaos and become comfortable being uncomfortable.
💪 Stronger body.
🧠 Stronger mind.
⚡ Better reactions.
👊 Real confidence.
You don’t need to be fit first.
You don’t need experience.
And you definitely don’t need to already be confident.
Sometimes confidence comes after you find the courage to walk through the door.
🔥 One decision. One first step. A completely different version of you.
You’ve got this… and we’ve got you. 👊💚

If your training only makes you tired, is it really preparing you for pressure?
At KMAA Self Defence Academy, we don’t build classes around 50 push ups, 100 sit ups and endless rounds on a bag. Fitness matters, but real self defence demands far more than fitness.
Our drills, games, scenarios, cardio and strength work are designed to develop decision making under stress, fast reactions, adaptability, resilience and the ability to stay calm when everything becomes chaotic.
We teach you to become comfortable being uncomfortable.
Because those skills don’t just help during a violent encounter. They help you deal with pressure, uncertainty, setbacks and difficult situations in everyday life.
Strength is useful. Fitness is useful.
But self defence should also train the mind, the response and the person under pressure.
Not all training is the same, because not all training has the same end goal.
What’s yours?
If your goal is real world self defence, come experience what real self defence training actually requires.
KMAA Self Defence Academy
Real skills. Real pressure. Real confidence.

⚠️ IF YOUR SELF DEFENCE TECHNIQUE NEEDS A COMPLIANT PARTNER AND 27 TAKES TO LOOK GOOD… IT’S PROBABLY NOT SELF DEFENCE.
Worth a read if you want some uncomfortable truths about the fancy rubbish being passed off online as “real world” self defence.
We’re sick of seeing front choke releases involving clever wrist grabs, elbow turns, arm manipulations and technical little sequences that look amazing when your mate is standing there cooperating.
Violence isn’t pretty. Your response doesn’t need to be pretty either.
It needs to be simple, aggressive, instinctive and achievable under pressure especially for a smaller person dealing with someone bigger and stronger.
And here’s something people constantly miss:
The answer to the grab isn’t always at the grab.
A strong front choke is a perfect example. If someone significantly stronger has both hands crushing your throat, simply trying to peel those hands away may be the hardest option available.
Meanwhile, both of their hands are occupied.
Eyes. Throat. Groin.
Sometimes you don’t “release the technique.”
You create a reaction that releases the problem.
Stop being impressed because something looks clever on camera.
Ask yourself:
Could I actually do this frightened, surprised, under pressure, against someone stronger who genuinely wants to hurt me?
If the answer is no, the technique being fancy doesn’t make it better.
Keep it simple. Keep it realistic. Keep it real.

TRAIN TO REACT, ADAPT & MAKE DECISIONS UNDER STRESS — NOT TO JUST STAND THERE AND FIGHT.
Are you training real world self defence, a combat sport, or a martial art?
The difference matters.
“I box.”
“I do MMA.”
“I’ve trained for years.”
“I could handle myself in the street.”
Could you?
We don’t BS our students. In real world violence there are no guarantees. Someone with zero training can seriously hurt or even kill someone highly trained.
That’s why we say:
You don’t have to be bigger, stronger or the better fighter.
You just have to be smarter than the person attacking you in that moment.
Be aware. React decisively. Make decisions under stress. Adapt when things change. Escape when you can. De-escalate when possible. And if violence gives you no other option, be capable of responding with greater aggression than the person attacking you.
Running, avoiding and de-escalating are always our first choices. But sometimes the only answer to violence is decisive action.
How you train matters. The skills you develop matter. You need the right tools for the job.
KMAA doesn’t claim to teach boxing, MMA, Muay Thai or traditional martial arts. If that’s what you want, we’ll happily point you toward people who specialise in them.
We stay in our lane.
Our lane is self defence.
Every skill, scenario and pressure drill we teach is built around preparing people for unpredictable real world violence.
And even then, we make no guarantees.
Training doesn’t make you unbeatable.
It simply prepares you better and improves your odds if violence comes knocking.
Every style has value and almost any quality training is better than none. But ask yourself:
What am I actually training for?
What do I want my training to prepare me for?
Then choose the training, environment and people that develop those skills and that mindset.
KMAA offers FREE trial lessons for everyone, experienced or complete beginners. Our students range from 15 through to their 50s, 60s and beyond.
Try different places.
Ask questions. Find somewhere practical, supportive, inclusive and enjoyable.
Then decide for yourself.

🚨 A LOT OF ONLINE CHOKE DEFENCE IS COMPLETE RUBBISH.
Grabbing wrists. “Plucking” hands. Pushing elbows. Trying to spin a bigger, stronger aggressor into some neat rear control position.
It looks great when your partner is compliant, knows exactly what’s coming and basically helps you perform the technique.
A real choke doesn’t work like that.
A real aggressor can be stronger, more aggressive and completely unpredictable. While you’re busy trying to make a fancy wrist release work, they can headbutt, punch, drive you into something or put you in an even worse position.
At KMAA, we don’t pretend there’s always a magic technique that makes the problem disappear.
Sometimes technique alone is highly unlikely to release the choke.
Your priorities are immediate protection, staying functional under pressure, reacting decisively and creating the opportunity to escape.
Because sometimes the thing that changes the situation isn’t a prettier technique.
It’s aggression.
Keep it real. Stop teaching compliant demonstrations as though they’re guaranteed real world solutions.
Reality is, and always will be, the final teacher.

Everyone loves the quote… right up until the BIG dog turns around. 😂🐕
“It’s not the dog in the fight… it’s how much fight’s in the dog.”
True.
But all the fight in the world means bu**er all if, when things get real, your confidence packs its bags and runs faster than that Chihuahua. 🤣
Real self defence isn’t about feeling tough. It’s about having the mindset, skills and ability to ACT when someone bigger, stronger or more aggressive is standing in front of you.
Because heart matters. Grit matters. Attitude matters.
But you also need to know how to even the odds up and that's not with rules or sport fighters thinking. Yes that's will help in some Instances. But sheer violence and the real world is a different type of dog in the fight.
⚡ Message KMAA now. We can’t make you the biggest dog in the fight — but we can help put the "right" fight in YOU.

Are You Really Learning Self Defence?
THE KMAA 3 PILLARS OF SELF DEFENCE
Apparently, “He rushed me with a blade” is a defence now. 😂🐶🔪
But in the real world, self defence is about far more than learning how to punch, kick or escape a grab.
You also need to understand WHEN you can defend yourself, HOW MUCH force is reasonable, whether you can use a weapon, when the danger is actually over, and what you should do next.
At KMAA we teach the whole confrontation, not just the physical fight.
1️⃣ PRE FIGHT — See it coming
Awareness • Avoidance • Vigilance
Recognise trouble, threats and warning signs before violence unfolds.
2️⃣ THE FIGHT — Take action
Respond • React • Adapt • Defend
Learn how to act decisively when avoidance is no longer an option.
3️⃣ POST FIGHT — What happens next?
Do I stay or leave?
Do I call police or seek medical help?
Are they waiting outside or near my car?
Am I being followed?
Is the threat really over?
Real world self defence doesn't start with the first punch, and it doesn't necessarily end with the last one.
KMAA Self Defence Academy teaches all aspects of confrontation and violence. Before. During. After.
And learning not only "how to fight", but how "not to fight" because real world violence isn't like you think. It has no points, no trophies, no rules, no Doctors stoppage, and no mercy.
"Let that last paragraph sink in"

NO DELETE BUTTON IN THE REAL WORLD 😂🔪🥊
Closed eye drills are one of our favourite ways to train fast reactions and decision making under surprise.
Eyes stay closed until you're grabbed, threatened or told to open them, then whatever is happening, you have to react NOW.
In this one, her first reaction to the knife threat was beautiful. Strong, immediate attack to the knife arm and the knife went flying across the room. 👌
Then straight away...
“OPEN!”
Punch incoming.
This reaction not as pretty lol, sees me filming and starts laughing.
I said, “Got that on camera.”
Her response:
“NO! Delete that one!” 😂
Sorry... there's no delete, reset or “let's try that again” button in the real world.
So the video stays. 😂
And that's actually the lesson.
Too much training becomes:
❌ Stop.
❌ That's wrong.
❌ Start again.
❌ Do the technique properly.
Reality doesn't work like that.
You react.
Sometimes beautifully.
Sometimes awkwardly. Sometimes you completely stuff it up.
But you keep going.
At KMAA, we don't believe every reaction has to look perfect. There are better reactions and not so good reactions, but whatever comes out under pressure, you need to learn how to adapt, make it work and fight on.
Because when it's real...
No resets. No do.overs.
No perfect technique.
Just react • adapt • keep fighting. 👊
