We are a not-for-profit incorporated association practicing and supporting Kyudo, the martial art of traditional Japanese archery, in Victoria. Odoguma Kyudo Melbourne ('OKM') was officially established in February 2022 and affiliated to Australia's state and national associations, Victorian Kyudo Association and Australian Kyudo Association, but have been training casually since mid-2020 in the height of the COVID-19 pandemic whenever restrictions allowed for it. As a club founded in passion, we hope to represent both the Japanese and Australian culture with respect and aim to bring the art of Kyudo to the public. We are a friendly dojo and welcome anyone looking to start their Kyudo journey.

Last weekend, 12-13 September, 30 members of OKM alongside members of Seiran Kyudo Kai, Sydney Kyudo Kai, and Seikoku Kai China attended the Victorian Kyudo Association 2026 Seminar with Liu Sensei and Weng Sensei of Taiwan Kyudo Association.

This is Liu Sensei and Weng Sensei's 3rd visit to Melbourne for a Seminar. We are incredibly greatful for their advice. Especialy so because they have had the experience of building their own Kyudo communities in Taiwan, making them excellent role models for us to follow in their footsteps. We appreciate that they emphasize it is not only important to learn correct shooting, but also many different aspects important to forming a community and fostering good friendships in Kyudo.

Thank you to the 17 members from OKM who volunteered to assist with the event logistics, including moving around and setting up the equipment, as well as helping with the running of the seminar itself.

Thank you to our members Diego, Rachel, and Ray who performed the Yawatashi to open the seminar on Saturday, as well as Calista, Kris, and Charlene who performed in the Hitotsumato Sharei demonstration on Sunday.

And a huge thank you on behalf of OKM goes to the VKA committe (Calista, Diego, Leona, and Zaynah) for organising and running a very succesful event! It is thanks to your generous volunteer efforts that we are able to have these excellent opportunities to work on improving our Kyudo.

OKM Club Training Diary 23/8/2026: Today we discussed Nerai (aiming), and practised checking the aim for each other. Ensuring your Nerai is correct can help you diagnose your shooting in eliminating aim as a factor. Ie. If aim is correct and you missed the mato, it is therefore because something in your form or shooting technique is incorrect.

In the Kyudo Manual p.71, Nerai is explained as follows: "In the full draw (Kai) the arrow must be directed along a line exactly to the centre of the target. In principle, aiming (Nerai) (with both eyes open) is determined by looking to the centre of the target, over the left fist on the left side of the bow, aiming with the outer corner of the left eye and the inner corner of the right eye. (see diagram) Normally, the arrow is horizontal to the target over the shooting distance of 28 meters, but the height of the left fist differs according to whether the distance is far or near, or whether the bow is strong or weak, or whether the the arrow is light or heavy."

We are proud to announce that the Fourth Australian National Kyudo Seminar and Taikai has been officially certified as an anniversary event commemorating the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Basic Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between Japan and Australia. 🇦🇺🇯🇵

Bringing together kyudo practitioners and teachers from Japan, Australia and beyond, this special event celebrates the enduring friendship between our two countries through the shared practice of kyudo.

A few things worth celebrating at OKM today!

We bid farewell to Tomonari and Rin today and wish them a safe flight back to Japan. Thanks for training with us - we'll miss you, and come visit again soon!

Thank you also to our wonderful Instructor Calista and assistant Suji for running the class! Your time and dedication to helping newcomers to Kyudo to learn is incredibly invaluable and much appreciated.

We are hoping to welcome more members to the club following the conclusion of this class. Our next Introduction course will run in October.
