The season opener! The salty!
The coxswains journey is a podcast/ blog designed for all things coxing, rowing and sport in general.
Meet Guy, a sports enthusiast who discovered his passion for sport at the age of 13. It all began with a memorable “fun run” covering 9 kilometers, followed shortly by a somewhat challenging completion of the Melbourne Marathon. If you ever want to be a part of a crew, you MUST understand this
So I had just finished a swim session at the pool yesterday and I got chatting with a guy afterwards, he asked me about triathlon. He said to me “if you could give one great tip for someone starting out what would it be”
I said, “that’s easy, but it’s not just one tip, it’s a few combined, firstly, don’t take yourself too seriously, next, try to learn to enjoy training (if you don’t) and finally, enjoy the journey regardless of outcome”
I finished by saying, “that took about 5 seconds to say, but took me over 30 years to learn!”
This is a true story and applies to all sport! 🙂

AI is changing the way we train. But does that mean it will replace coaches?
I don't think so.
After using AI for everything from everyday life to building training programs and AI agents for rowing, I've become convinced that the real opportunity is not replacing the coach, but giving the coach more time to actually coach.
The technology can write a training session. The hard part is knowing what information to give it, how to structure the instructions, and how to make sure the athlete is brutally honest about their actual fitness and abilities.
And perhaps most importantly, good coaching is about far more than writing programs. It's about understanding the person behind the athlete.
I've written about what I've learned from using AI in training, and why I think it could become a very powerful training partner when used properly.

AI – A New Way to Train, or Not? - The Coxswains Journey Before I get into this article, I probably need a couple of disclaimers. I am not an AI expert, computer scientist or software engineer. I would describe myself as an AI hobbyist. I have been Read more

I’m glad this conversation is finally happening!
Traditional coaching cues often destroy boat speed by demanding artificial length during high-pressure sprints.
Optimizing your rate per minute requires respecting water physics over stubborn dogma to protect your biomechanical synchronization.
At what specific rating do you abandon full length in your crew line-up?

A shoutout to all coxswains! The ultimate coxswain race is coming up (Head of the Yarra of course) and many crews are looking for coxswains.
It’s your chance to have a crack! If you’re concerned about your ability, don’t be! Have a go, that’s how we learn.
Many crews need coxswains, and you will add value! So back yourself and put your hand up!
Feel free to yell out or DM me!
