Health Promotion Practitioner Andie Murphy never imagined her own life would become a beacon for women’s health awareness.
“I was a very healthy person—there was no reason for me to be sick,” she reflects.
That all changed in March 2024. At the time, Andie was working full-time at Peninsula Health, studying, and running a small business coaching women in mental health and wellbeing. “I’ve always been independent, the kind of person who just gets on with life—the do-er! I never asked for help.”
She had been experiencing persistent abdominal and back pain, loss of appetite, bloating, and frequent urination—symptoms initially investigated as fibromyalgia and menopause-related changes. But before she could return for further testing, she suffered a sudden lung collapse.
In the Emergency Department, doctors discovered a pleural effusion—a buildup of fluid in her lungs. Given her childhood history of bronchitis and pneumonia, Andie wasn’t overly concerned. But once the fluid was drained and tested, the diagnosis was life-altering: Stage Four High-grade Serous Adenocarcinoma Ovarian Cancer.
“I was attending a follow-up appointment at the outpatient lung clinic at Peninsula Health, completely confused,” Andie recalls. “I said, ‘I’m here for my lungs—how are you getting ovarian cancer from this?’ The doctor replied, ‘It’s part of Stage Four Ovarian Cancer.’”
Scans revealed tumors in her ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, lungs, and omentum. Treatment began immediately. She underwent six months of aggressive chemotherapy and major surgery. Despite the enduring severe side effects, her initial treatment showed promise. For a time, doctors believed the cancer was gone, and her lung tumors were declared dormant.
But in January this year, two new tumors appeared near where her ovaries had been. (Read rest of story in comments)

A very important day for us to raise more of the much needed awareness and funding for medical research. We need more specific treatments to overcome this debilitating disease and the focus is on developing much better ways to diagnose, treat and prevent ovarian cancer for women now and for generations to come!

As you know last year was tough.
Out of the blue I was diagnosed with stage 4 high grade series carcinoma ovarian cancer

I underwent six months of chemotherapy as well as major surgery.

Then in October we had very good news: a PET scan revealed no cancer tumours present, which brought us so much joy and hope. I was placed on a 12-month treatment plan with Avastin (bevacizumab), a monoclonal antibody. And have done 6 rounds of this treatment so far.

New UPDATE: 👇🏼
January 23rd I attended the regular 3 month PET scan, and on January 28th, I was sadly informed that I now have two new tumours near my bladder.

This without a doubt was devastating news—it came far too soon, as we were so hopeful for more “no cancer tumours present” results.

This also means I’ll no longer continue with Avastin and instead with my oncology team we begin exploring clinical trial options to determine the best path forward.

Jordan and I are adjusting again.

We’re selling my home, and while he continues to work full-time, train hard, and run in his long list of ultra-marathons for the year, he remains by my side, caring for me through it all.

Days away!

We are literally 5 days away from the start of Jordan’s race… he will kick off at noon this Friday 22nd Nov for the GPT100miler!

This run he has been preparing for is so much bigger to us on so many levels than it would have been had he been able to run it last year when he first signed up. But fracturing his ankle & ending up in boot for 6 weeks moved it to this year!

And this year has been huge as you know!
After my diagnosis in March Jordy made a decision to raise money for Ovarian Cancer Australia and so he pledge to raise $8000 before the race!

He is $489 shy of the half way mark $4000….. and we feel this is a huge achievement in its own right!
So although we didn’t hit the $8k
We’ve regrouped with a knew goal!!!
To get to $4k before Friday!

After dealing with my diagnosis one of my own ‘adjusted’ goals was to be at that finish line and with the help of a close friend that is exactly where I will be… I will be arriving to that finish line on Saturday 23rd and I can not wait!!

Watching jordy go through all he has gone through this year makes this event EXTREMELY special… and no mater the outcome starting and finishing a race like this is nothing short of enduring and inspiring

I also want to thank Jordy’s tribe for stepping up and supporting him through this…. We fully understand the commitment and time as it’s going to be big for you too!
