The tugboat creates dependence. The lighthouse creates leaders.

A tugboat pulls everyone along. It solves the problems and does the thinking.

A lighthouse stands tall, shines brightly, and helps others navigate for themselves.

Nowhere is that shift harder than at home.

When your kids are young, they need direction. They need you making the decisions.

But as they grow, your role has to change.

It stops being: “”Here’s what we’re doing.””

And becomes:
“”What do you think?””
“”Why?””
“”What would you do?””

Because the goal isn’t to raise kids who follow your path.

It’s to raise confident adults who can think for themselves, make good decisions, and chase a life that’s meaningful to them.

The same is true in business.

If every decision still comes through you, you’re not building leaders, you’re building dependence.

It’s easier to be the tugboat.

But the longer you stay there, the more your team, your business, and even your kids rely on you instead of growing without you.

Are you leading like a tugboat... or a lighthouse?

Most business owners spend years trying to be the tugboat.

Always pulling, pushing, solving everyone’s problems.

And in the early years, that’s exactly what’s needed.

Your crew lacks experience.
Your systems aren’t there yet.
Your kids are young.
Everyone depends on you.

As your business and your family grow, your job has to change too.

The tugboat creates dependence.

The lighthouse creates direction.

A lighthouse doesn’t chase ships. It simply stands tall, shines brightly and gives others the confidence to navigate for themselves.

That’s what great leadership becomes. And here’s the lesson I love most...

It works both ways.

The patience and presence you develop at home make you a better business owner.

The clarity and consistency you build in business make you a better husband and father.

Leadership isn’t something you switch on at work.

It’s who you become.

Some of the best conversations don’t happen in the conference room.

They happen on a boat, out on the reef, between a few laughs… usually in a shirt loud enough to see from space. 🌴

After two big days of learning, challenging each other and celebrating the year that was, Day 3 was about enjoying it together.

Just a crew of trades business owners out on the Great Barrier Reef.

Snorkelling. Lunch. A couple of beers. Plenty of laughs.

That’s one of the things I love most about these events.

You come together to do the work.

But somewhere along the way, you build friendships, share experiences and create relationships that go well beyond business.

Because building something meaningful isn’t only about the revenue, the profit or the growth.

It’s about who you get to do it with.

Port Douglas 2026.

Great Barrier Reef. Loud shirts. Good people.

A pretty bloody good way to finish the year. 🐠⚓

They weren’t trying to just grow. They were trying to scale a broken business model.

From the outside, everything looked good.

Thirty to thirty-five guys on the tools.
Eight or nine people in the office.
Everyone flat out.

They thought busy meant profitable. It didn’t.

The numbers told a completely different story.

Labour costs were out of control.
The operational structure had become bloated.
The harder they worked, the more money they were burning.

As soon we they looked at the numbers in coaching, the strategy became obvious.

Stop trying to grow. First, fix the business.

That meant making some hard decisions.

People moved back into operations.
The office structure was right-sized.
Unproductive labour was cut.

None of it was easy.

But once the business became profitable again, everything changed.

The wins started stacking up.

Not just in the numbers but in Trent.

Where he used to sit on decisions and overthink them, he now backs himself and moves.

Because that’s what happens when you stop chasing activity and start building a business that actually works.

Imagine believing in your transformation so deeply... you tattooed it on your body.

That’s exactly what Trent did.

He’s the only client with the Pravar logo tattooed on him.

When he told his wife he wanted to do it, she didn’t tell him not to.

She simply asked...

“”Why?””

His answer had nothing to do with the logo.

“”I want to always be able to look down and remember who I am. The journey I’ve gone through. Everything I’ve done. That’s who I am. I’m the guy who does what he says he’s gonna do, when he says he’s gonna do it.””

That’s what real transformation looks like.

Not a better business.

Not more money.

A new identity.

Because when you change the man, everything around him changes.

His leadership.
His business.
His family.
His future.

We dive into Trent’s journey in the latest episode of The Trade Den.

Port Douglas 2026 🌴

Three days with our Lifestyle and Legacy communities, partners by our side, celebrating what this year has really been about.

Not just revenue, profit and growth.

But the men behind the businesses.

The decisions they’ve made. The standards they’ve raised. The pressure they’ve carried. And the way they’ve continued to lead their teams, their businesses and their families through another big year.

The conference was about raising standards and leading through uncertainty.

The Awards Night was something special.

A chance to stop, look back and recognise some incredible transformations across business, wealth, health and family.

Then we finished with a day out on the reef; continuing the conversations, sharing a few laughs, snorkelling out on the reef and strengthening the relationships that make this community what it is.

That’s what these events are really about.

Creating the space to step away from the day-to-day, celebrate how far you’ve come, reconnect with the people around you, and raise the standard for what comes next.

Because Pravar has never just been about building better businesses.

It’s about transforming businesses, reconnecting families, and belonging to a community of people who genuinely want to see each other win.

Port Douglas, you delivered.

Now onto FY27. 👊

Here’s an activity you can do today...

Open your accounting package or job management system and run a report on your customers over the last 12 to 24 months.

You’re looking for three things: the holes, the trends, and the opportunities.

Maybe there’s a strata manager who was giving you $20-30K a month. Six months ago it dropped to $5K. You never noticed... you just had a vague feeling they weren’t passing as much work.

We’ve done this with clients, and here’s what they find: the contact moved on, or there was an issue on a job site nobody talked about.

So the work quietly went to another trade.

No conversation.
No warning.
Just revenue walking out the door while you were too busy to see it.

Run the report. Look at the data. The numbers tell a story.

Most tradies think they’re doing account management. They’re not, they’re doing project management.

There’s a clear difference. Talking about the job, what’s happening on-site, where things are up to... that’s operational.

Account management from a sales perspective is something else entirely: deliberate, ongoing work on the relationship itself.

Because people do business with those they know, like, and trust.

That’s the essence of it. Building the rapport, the connection, the partnership — so they have the confidence to keep giving you work.

The confidence to keep passing you quotes.
The confidence to bring you back to the negotiation table even when someone else comes in cheaper.

That’s what wins ongoing work. And most of it is sitting right under your nose.

Port Douglas Awards Night 2026 was a night to remember 🏆

This year marked something new for Pravar.. for the first time, our Lifestyle and Legacy communities came together under one roof to celebrate the year that’s been.

Not just the business results, but the men who stayed in the fight, kept showing up, and became better leaders, husbands and fathers along the way.

Congratulations to our 2026 category winners:

🏆 Bevan Award — Jake Mohr, Power Mate Electrics
🏆 Transformation Award — Danny Hipwell, Bendigo Building Repairs
🏆 Breakthrough Award — Matt Ryan, MTR Electrical
🏆 Excellence Award — David Willcox, Common Ground

From taking his business past $5M while still packing school lunches, to a man who went from “”maybe this is as good as it gets”” to leading with total clarity, to backing his value and taking his seat at the table, to building an $13M business without losing its heart... these stories are proof of what’s possible when a man raises his standard and refuses to settle.

To everyone who celebrated and showed up for each other in that rainforest.

Thank you.

This community is built by every single one of you.

Here’s to another year of raising the bar 👊

The biggest cost of staying on the tools isn’t the hours. It’s growth.

When the owner is at maximum capacity, the business is at maximum capacity.

It’s not a market issue, it’s a capacity issue.

Your time is filled with work that brings in revenue but does nothing to grow the business or capitalise on the opportunities sitting right in front of you.

We hear it all the time.

Working 60 hours a week, 15 or 20 of them on the tools, money’s not where it should be, feeling disconnected from the family.

Something’s gotta change.

So here’s the question: are you actually ready to step off the tools and run the business properly?

Because “”kind of ready”” isn’t a decision. You can’t have one leg either side of the fence trying to be a tradie and a business owner at the same time means doing both badly.
