“1926 – The Year Queensland Fell in Love with Golf”,
It’s a fascinating period in Queensland golf history. While it may seem a coincidence that so many clubs trace their beginnings to 1926, there were several social and economic reasons why golf experienced a boom during the mid-1920s.
Why was 1926 such a significant year?
The years immediately following the First World War saw Australia enter a period of optimism and growth. By the mid-1920s:
* The economy had recovered from the war, giving communities more confidence to establish sporting clubs.
* Returned servicemen were looking for organised recreation and social activities, and golf became increasingly popular.
* Improved transport, particularly motor cars and better roads, made it easier to travel to golf courses.
* Regional towns were prospering, driven by mining, agriculture and port development, creating communities large enough to support golf clubs.
* Golf was also becoming more affordable and accessible, moving beyond being a sport only for the wealthy. Public and municipal courses began appearing around Queensland during this period.
Why places like Gladstone, Mackay and Clermont?
Many regional centres had reached a point where they had:
* stable populations,
* successful local businesses,
* civic pride,
* and volunteers willing to establish sporting organisations.
Golf clubs became important community hubs, much like bowling clubs and cricket clubs.
Queensland clubs celebrating 100 years in 2026
There are quite a number of Queensland clubs marking their centenary this year, including:
* Gladstone Golf Club – founded 1926.
* Gympie Golf Club – officially formed on 30 September 1926.
* St Lucia Golf Links – opened in July 1926 as the original home of Indooroopilly Golf Club.
* Mackay Golf Club – celebrating its centenary in 2026.
* Clermont Golf Club – also reaches 100 years in 2026.
* City Golf Club – its modern history dates from 1926 and it is celebrating its centenary this year.
There are likely a handful of smaller regional clubs that also began in 1926, although records for some country clubs are less complete because they evolved from informal golfing groups before becoming incorporated.
An interesting observation
The decade from 1920 to 1930 was arguably the greatest expansion period in Queensland golf. Earlier clubs such as Brisbane Golf Club (1890), Royal Queensland Golf Club (1920), Gailes Golf Club (1924), Oxley Golf Club (1928) and Nudgee Golf Club (1929) illustrate how rapidly the game spread during that era.

A big month of golf in May culminated with the Haymans Electrical Gympie Club Championships. Micheal Smoothey was the most consistent over all 4 rounds to win his 20th (or is it 21st) Mens Club Championship!
Charlotte Rensonnet overcame a halfway deficient on the final weekend, winning her first Ladies Club Championship.
Both Charlotte and Michael are very deserving champions in our 100th year, and the course looked and played great. Thankyou for Russell and the Haymans Team for their continued sponsorship, and congratulations to all the winners, and thanks to the 71 players who completed all 4 rounds.
