World Ocean Day

Today is World Ocean Day, and how fortunate are we to live in a beautiful country surrounded by the vast blue expanse of our oceans.

But the ocean is so much more than just a serene landscape; it is truly special. Covering about 71% of our planet’s surface and containing 97% of its water, the ocean is crucial for human habitability. It provides drinking water, weather regulation, much of our food, and over half of the oxygen we breathe. The ocean also plays vital biogeochemical and ecological roles, including:

1. Carbon Cycle: Absorbing about one-third of human-produced CO2, the ocean helps mitigate climate change.
2. Nutrient Cycling: Integral in cycling essential nutrients, the ocean supports marine productivity.
3. Oxygen Production: Phytoplankton in the ocean produce more than half of the world’s oxygen supply.
4. Heat Distribution: The ocean regulates the Earth’s climate by distributing heat globally.
5. Biodiversity: As a main source of the world’s biodiversity, the ocean contains about 250,000 known species, with many more yet to be discovered. It constitutes over 90% of the planet’s habitable space, with at least two-thirds of marine species still unidentified.
6. Food Security: The ocean provides significant food resources for billions of people.
7. Habitat Formation: The ocean supports unique habitats like coral reefs and mangroves, essential for marine life and coastal protection.
8. Economic Value: The ocean contributes to global economies through fisheries, tourism, and shipping.

As noted by marine biologist Dr. Sylvia Earle, “Even if you never have the chance to see or touch the ocean, the ocean touches you with every breath you take, every drop of water you drink, every bite you consume. No water, no life - no blue, no green.”

As we all have a role to play, let’s do what we can to not only enjoy but also protect our beautiful oceans and waterways.
