Custom Surfboards & Corrective Coaching

Photos from Clayton Surf Australia's post 16/08/2026

10 days together gives me something short coaching sessions rarely do: time.
Time to see not just what keeps going wrong in your surfing, but why it keeps happening.
Once we find the underlying cause, we can work on changing the pattern, not just fixing the mistake.

A rail turn isn’t just about changing direction,it’s about creating speed.

When the board is put properly on rail, less of the board’s bottom is pushing flat against the water. That can reduce drag and allow the board to flow more efficiently through the turn.

Combine that with a clean line, good timing and pressure through the turn, and the board doesn’t just hold speed, it can accelerate through the turn.

That’s the magic of a good rail turn:
less resistance → more flow → more speed out of the turn.

I've spent years trying to make complicated things simple.
Not just so you can see what's happening.
So you can understand it.
Then feel it.
And eventually, do it without thinking about it.
See it -> Understand it -> Feel it -> Do it
That's the part of coaching I love the most, finding a simple way to make something finally click.

After all these years of surfing, shaping, coaching and travelling the world, this is still my idea of absolute heaven.
A small group of surfers, somewhere far from home, hunting for waves.
Whether it's living on a boat in the Mentawais, chasing swell in J-Bay or disappearing into Nicaragua, it's the same feeling.
Good people. Great waves. No noise. Just time to surf, learn, laugh and see where the next wave takes us.
This is where I want to be.

Taking the time to do the small things right creates more time and space on the wave.
Breathe before you paddle.
Wait until you feel the wave lift you.
Look at where the water is drawing off the bottom.
Hold your turn and wait until you reach the top.
Don’t rush surfing.
Take your time, and the wave gives you more time.

Following on from our Pop Up Series 4 about choosing the correct line, in this fifth instalment, we're now looking into body movement.

Once again we are checking out the pro surfers captured in super slo mo by Brent Rose. We also look a form on the mat and the skate bowl at the OMBE Lab.

This is so important as just a simple adjustment in posture and stance can literally open your field of view to give you the ability to see and read so much more of the wave.

But that's only the beginning, jump in and start moving correctly.

A lot of surfers are getting it wrong by overthinking their pop up.

In this fourth edition to our Pop Up series, again with the help of Brent Roses amazing slow motion video we are focusing not on the act of popping up itself but the line you are taking into the wave.

This is crucial to setting up the entire ride in the best way possible.

By choosing the correct line as you paddle in, you can create more time and space to then accelerate through your bottom turn, utilising the waves circular energy in the most efficient way possible.
