Last week, men gathered outside a detention centre in Miami to do press-ups. Press ups!!! Seriously.
They were supporting Andrew and Tristan Tate, who face extradition to the UK on charges including r**e, s*x trafficking and assault.
Ten days before that, the BBC reported on schoolgirls in Tyneside who'd made a film about what they hear every day. Threats of violence. Threats of r**e. All of it dismissed as banter. One girl described a "r**e list" the boys at her school had made, ranking the girls by who they most wanted to r**e.
Earlier this year, three boys aged roughly thirteen to fifteen were convicted of two r**es, one at knifepoint, both filmed. Their victims were fourteen and fifteen. All three received non-custodial sentences, and the outcry was loud enough that the sentences were referred for government review.
This week, multiple Sydney Swans players being investigated into an alleged s*xual assault that occured in Melbourne, a situation the players 'found themselves in' apparently.
If you've felt something rising in you these past few weeks, welcome to the club, you're not overreacting. You're reading the situation correctly.
This week in The Second Chapter Brief I've written about how we got here. The economy that sells boys grievance and sells girls dependence and how it profits from both.
Where that turns up in workplaces run by men who learned it at nineteen. And the question nobody asks, what power was supposed to come with and who has been let off answering for it.

If you read that list and one of them was uncomfortably specific, that’s the one.
👉🏻 Send this to the woman who’s been saying she’s fine.
📎 Save this to remind you it’s ok not to be fine.
I went to an FIA (Fundraising Institute of Australia) networking breakfast event this morning.
I almost didn’t, it was early and I had a full day ahead. I’m glad I did though, and not for the reason I expected.
Here’s why I noticed…

The word was never neutral.
Men get "a midlife crisis" and buy a car.
Women get "a midlife crisis" and get asked if they've considered that it might be hormonal.
It's a power shift. It's been coming for a while.
What age were you when you first felt it?
I read every one.
Nobody ever taught us how to build a life on purpose. We were taught how to be useful, and we got very good at it.
The Second Chapter Reset is where you stop managing consequences and start making decisions again.

There's no announcement when it arrives.
No formal handover, no transition plan, no moment where someone sits you down and says this next phase is going to require a completely different approach.
It just arrives, usually at 3am, usually with company. Brain fog, a hot flush, the sudden and absolute evaporation of your tolerance for nonsense.
And underneath all of that, a realisation that is quieter but considerably more significant: I cannot keep doing this the same way.
Not because you're less capable. Because the combination you're now carrying; changing hormones, increasing responsibility, ageing parents, dependent children and leadership roles designed around a 1990s male workforce, has become structurally unsustainable.
That distinction matters. This isn't a you problem. It's a design problem.
Your second chapter doesn't need to be quieter. It needs to be truer.

Cast your mind back to 1999.
American Beauty wins Best Picture. A middle-aged man unravels his entire life going after what he wants and the world hands him an Oscar.
I've been thinking about that film a lot lately. About how differently we tell that story when the midlife reckoning belongs to a woman.
This edition of the Second Chapter Brief is about that double standard.
The silver fox versus the woman who's "too old."
American Beauty vs And Just Like That.
George Clooney getting better with age vs Madonna being told to put it away.
The man who blows up his life at midlife and gets called brave, the woman who does it and gets called a lot of other things.
It was never a crisis for them. It was just men doing what they'd always done. So why shouldn't we take a few pages from that playbook?
Issue 7 of The Second Chapter Brief is live.
And you're welcome for the throwback Friday tune 💃 because if anyone understood being told she was too old, too much, too audacious and doing it anyway it was Madonna. The woman they said had peaked. In a leotard. Absolutely not caring. We salute you.
Some of us were in a club when this came on. Some of us still are. 💃

Sorry.
A word that we use to make ourselves smaller, more palatable and less confrontational.
How many times have you said sorry today? Not because it was warranted but to apologise in advance, for being a full sized human being with a valid point to share.
Listen more about the many ways women shrink, where it all came from and what it actually looks like to take the space back.
