20 years ago today | Day 10 in Afghanistan 🇦🇺

I’m ten days into typing up the diary I kept during our 2006–07 deployment.

On 29 September 2006, we were called out to provide security at the airfield in Tarin Kowt. I was in the front turret of a Bushmaster as we patrolled along the HESCO wall. Some photographers took our picture. I didn’t know who they were and thought little more of it.

Years later, I was looking for a Bushmaster model for my kids when I spotted myself on the box — still up in that turret. Barry Spicer had also used the image in his artwork. Since then, I’ve seen it on prints, a jigsaw, a stubby cooler and commemorative coins.

Back then, it was just another day on deployment. I had no idea where that photo would end up.

Great Rolls with James Tomfoolery and the crew from Team Perosh Mixed Martial Arts this week during my time in Sydney. Amazing to see Anthony Perosh and Carlos Machado still on the mats guiding the next generation as well.

20 years ago today — 20 September 2006.

Twenty years ago today, we left Australia from Darwin and began the journey to Afghanistan as part of Reconstruction Task Force One (RTF-1).

I was part of a small group from 6RAR, heading over as part of what would become the first Australian non-Special Forces-led task force deployed into Afghanistan during the Global War on Terror.

This photo was taken of me in Kuwait, reading Stars and Stripes, just a few days before we flew into Tarin Kot, Afghanistan. Looking at it now, it's hard to comprehend that two decades have passed.

Throughout my deployments I kept a daily diary. I wrote down what we were doing, what was happening around us and probably plenty of things that only made sense to a soldier at the time. I haven't really sat down and read those diaries since.

Back then I set myself a goal: 20 years from now, I'll sit down and type them all up.

Well… 20 years is here.

So today I'm going to start.

Hopefully I can still decipher my handwriting and remember what half the Army lingo and abbreviations meant!

I know it won't always be easy to read. Some of the people whose names will appear throughout those pages are no longer with us. Some were lost on later deployments, some through illness, and others through tragic circumstances after their time in Defence.

Reading those names and reliving some of those days after 20 years will undoubtedly bring back a lot of memories and emotions — good times, difficult times, ridiculous moments, and people I was fortunate enough to serve alongside.

We were younger men heading into something none of us could completely understand at the time. Twenty years later, I think those diaries will mean something very different to me.

20 September 2006 – 20 September 2026.

Twenty years on. Time to open the first diary. 🇦🇺

Today’s lecture on Adaptive / ID Judo coaching with Kashiwazaki Katsuhiko — a true legend of our sport — was a powerful reminder that good judo is simply good coaching.
Clear rules. Simple language. Consistent structure.
Safety, balance, and confidence before force.
Adaptive judo isn’t about lowering standards — it’s about raising the quality of coaching so everyone can belong on the mat.
Grateful for the opportunity to learn from one of the great minds in judo and to take these lessons back into my own coaching practice.
Judo really is for everyone. 🥋

Huge thanks to for having me down tonight 🙏
Loved running a no-gi judo & takedowns session for the BJJ crew — focusing on practical entries, balance breaking, and standing transitions that actually carry over to rolls and competition.
Awesome energy on the mats, heaps of good questions, and a room full of people keen to learn. Appreciate the hospitality and the trust — hope the techniques add another layer to your game 👊🥋

I am deeply honoured to be appointed Head of the Australian Delegation for the upcoming Adaptive Judo Study Camp in Japan, delivered through Judo Australia.

This three-day study camp in Tokyo brings together international coaches, athletes, and leaders committed to the principle of Judo for All, with a strong focus on adaptive, inclusive, and disability-informed practice. It is an important opportunity to learn directly from global leaders in this space and ensure Australia continues to develop safe, meaningful, and accessible judo pathways.

This appointment strongly aligns with the work we are doing at Maishin Judo Club and through the Veterans Grappling Foundation, where inclusion, accessibility, and the use of judo as a tool for wellbeing, rehabilitation, and connection sit at the core of everything we do. The insights gained from this program will directly inform how we continue to support veterans, people with disability, and diverse community members across our programs.

I’m proud to represent Australia in this leadership role and look forward to bringing back practical knowledge that strengthens adaptive judo delivery nationally.
Thank you to Judo Australia and the organisers for the trust and opportunity.
