Which old familiar road is hardest for you to leave?
Which of these sounds most familiar? đ
A: âIf I donât do it, it wonât be done properly.â
B: âEveryone comes to me for decisions.â
C: âI struggle to switch off when I get home.â
D: âI know something needs to changeâŚI just donât know what.â
None of these necessarily mean youâre failing.
In fact, they can be the result of doing what made you successful for years.
But yesterdayâs success strategy can quietly become tomorrowâs limitation.
The question isnât:
âDid this road work?â
Clearly, it did.
The better question is:
âIs this road still taking me where I want to go?â đŁď¸
Better performance?
More capable people?
Less pressure?
More energy?
Better relationships at home?
Sometimes leadership is having enough courage to admit that the map needs updating.
đ A, B, C or D... which one hits closest to home?

Your family experiences the leadership habits you bring home.
One of the biggest myths about work/life balance is that work and home are separate roads.
Theyâre not.
You are the bridge between them.
If you spend your day:
đĽ solving everyoneâs problems
đĽ absorbing pressure
đĽ making every decision
đĽ being constantly available
âŚyou donât magically reset when you pull into the driveway.
You may bring home a shorter temper.
Less curiosity.
Less patience.
Less capacity to listen.
And sometimes the habit of fixing follows you inside too.
Your partner tells you about their dayâŚ
You offer a solution.
Your child shares a problemâŚ
You start coaching.
But sometimes the people we love donât need our leadership.
They need our presence.
Tonight, experiment with one simple question:
âDo you want me to help solve thisâor would you just like me to listen?â
That question can change the entire conversation. â¤ď¸
Sometimes the road home isnât measured in kilometres.
Itâs measured by how long it takes your mind to arrive.

I'm sure everyone will remember one of those timesđ¤

What if your success has quietly become your cage?
Youâve built something successful now.
But if everything still depends on youâŚ
...have you really built freedom, or simply built yourself a more impressive job?
Many successful leaders donât need another strategy.
They need help identifying the behaviours theyâve outgrown.
The constant availability.
The need to solve everything.
The inability to switch off.
The belief that carrying more means leading better.
â A ship can be perfectly secure at the dock.
But security isnât what it was built for.
My work with leaders is about creating sustainable performance without sacrificing the person behind the performance.
That means building stronger teams, clearer boundaries, greater trust and the capacity to actually be present when you walk through your front door.
If your business is succeeding but youâre wondering whether the road youâre travelling still fits the life you wantâŚ
... thatâs worth exploring.
Send me a message and letâs have a conversation about what your next road could look like. đ§

Yes, we can only make decisions based on the information we have at the time!đ¤

Stop solving problems your people need to learn to carry.
If your team brings every decision to you, you may not have a capability problem.
You may have accidentally created a dependency problem.
Strong leaders often fall into this trap because theyâre good at solving things.
Someone asks.
You answer.
Problem gone. â
Efficient todayâŚ
expensive tomorrow.
Because every time you automatically take over, you can unintentionally teach:
âYour judgement matters less than mine.â
Instead, practise:
PAUSE â CONNECT â BUILD TRUST
â¸ď¸ Pause: âDoes this genuinely require me?â
đ¤ Connect: âWhat do you think the best next step is?â
đą Build Trust: Give them room to act without grabbing the steering wheel back.
Leadership isnât about removing every obstacle from someoneâs road.
Itâs helping them develop the ability to navigate.
And hereâs the bonus:
Practise this at home too.
Listen before fixing.
Get curious before correcting.
Ask before advising.
Better leadership and better relationships often grow from the same skill:
Trusting people enough not to manage every moment.

The Hardest Shift in Leadership Is Admitting the Old Road Isnât Yours Anymore.
Comfort can look like security⌠but sometimes itâs just fear wearing a respectable disguise.
The hardest part of leadership isnât always finding the next road.
Sometimes itâs admitting the road youâve been travelling successfully for years no longer leads where you want to go.
You built your reputation by being dependable.
You stepped in. Solved problems. Worked longer. Carried responsibility. Made the decisions others avoided.
And it worked.
Until one day you realise the habits that helped build the business are now keeping you chained to it.
The old road feels familiar, and familiarity feels safe.
But thereâs a difference between being safe and staying small.
A ship tied securely to the dock will never sink in a storm⌠but itâll never discover anything either. â
When leaders keep using yesterdayâs survival strategies, their teams learn to wait instead of lead.
You become the answer to every question, the solution to every problem and the emotional thermostat for the room.
Eventually, performance suffers because trust never gets the chance to grow.
And that doesnât stop at the office door.
When you spend all day carrying everyone else, thereâs often very little emotional capacity left for your partner, your children... or yourself.
You may be physically home while your mind is still travelling the old road. đŁď¸
So, Try to Pause â Connect â & Build Trust along the way.
Before automatically taking over:
PAUSE: Ask, âDoes this genuinely require me?â
CONNECT: Instead of immediately solving the problem, ask:
âWhat do you think the best next step is?â
TRUST: Give the person room to act, and resist grabbing the steering wheel back.
This small shift communicates:
đ I see you.
đ I value your thinking.
đ I trust you to carry responsibility.
That creates stronger people, better decisions and deeper connection.
Practice the same thing at home.
Listen without immediately fixing.
Ask before advising.
Be curious before becoming corrective.
Trust grows when people feel they are with you, not being managed by you.
What if the next level of leadership doesnât require you to work harderâŚ
âŚbut to finally leave behind the version of leadership that says everything depends on you?
The old road got you here.
You can honour it without continuing to travel it.
Because sometimes leadership begins by having the courage to choose a new direction. đ§

When comfort becomes a respectable disguise for fear, comfort doesnât always feel comfortable.
Sometimes it looks like:
âIâll just handle it.â
âItâs quicker if I do it myself.â
âThey need me.â
âThis is how weâve always done it.â
Those statements can sound responsible.
But underneath them can be something harder to admit:
What happens if I stop being needed?
Thatâs one of leadershipâs quieter challenges.
We can become so identified with being the provider, fixer and dependable one that letting go feels almost irresponsible.
Yet there comes a point when holding everything together starts pulling you apart.
And your family often sees it before you do.
You arrive home physicallyâŚ
âŚbut your mind is still solving tomorrowâs problems.
The hardest road to leave is often the one that once made us feel important, capable and secure.
đŁď¸ Sometimes growth isnât about finding another gear.
Itâs about recognising youâre driving in the wrong direction.
What leadership habit once served you wellâŚbut may have reached its expiry date?
