𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗘𝗔 𝗜𝗦 𝗟𝗜𝗞𝗘 𝗔 𝗕𝗔𝗧𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗬 𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗥𝗚𝗘𝗥

Helen Day says her connection to the ocean began early, growing up in a family of beachgoers at Geraldton.

Her father was an ironman, often taking the five kids after school during summer.

“Those childhood days in the surf, it was just what we did and we loved it,” she says.

It’s a lifestyle that’s stayed with her ever since.

Now 58, Helen swims daily all year round, describing the ocean as essential to her wellbeing.

“It’s like a battery charge,” she said.

“If your phone is not plugged in, it doesn’t work. The water has that synergy for me.”

She says she notices a definite difference when she doesn’t swim, calling the ocean a life giver.

”It’s magic, it’s like sea magic.”

After her father passed away, Helen was drawn back to the water.

She says it’s a place to be held by nature, with the movement and energy of the sea helping to process grief.

“It doesn’t matter who you are … it’s just like, come on in, baby… there’s no judgment,” she says.

Whether it’s calm or wild, Helen finds the water a sense of bliss and joy, something she believes is deeply human, a childlike connection to nature that we’re not meant to lose.
