Congratulations to our eight members who had their craft of choice named in their honour for their long-term service and outstanding contribution to the club. The naming ceremony was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate their dedication, recognise the difference they have made over many years, and thank them for helping build the strong club we enjoy today. We are incredibly grateful for their commitment, and we hope they enjoy seeing their names proudly carried on the water for years to come.

Eight members of the Footscray Canoe Club spent last weekend, based at Bridgewater on the Loddon, and paddling on the Loddon river and Serpentine Creek. The plan was to do a test run on the Serpentine Creek and Laanecoorie Canoe Trails as well as a pleasant paddle on the Loddon at Bridgewater.
On the way home Sunday morning we stopped off at the Laanecoorie, to do the Laanecoorie Canoe Trail. The trail starts at the free camping reserve and boat ramp just below the bridge. A little over 1km up-stream we came to the bottom of the Laanecoorie reservoir weir. About 1 km down-stream the canoe trial narrows, with some interesting tight turns and snags before it comes to the end at a small weir. The narrows were interesting and reasonably easy to negotiate – but the water was shallow enough to stand in if you got in any sort of trouble. All up the Laanecoorie canoe trail was around 5.5 Km.

After a nice lunch at the Bridgewater Bakery, we went for a short 10/1Km paddle on the Loddon at Bridgewater. It was very calm and easy to paddle. While we only did a short paddle this trip, in previous trips we have cover a few extra kilometres upstream.

We drove to Durham Ox on the Saturday morning to do the Serpentine Creek Canoe Trail. The start of the canoe trail is at the Boort - Pyramid Rd bridge, where there is an info shed and a canoe launching ramp (for the plastic boats), but nothing else. The creek was very easy to paddle with only a few snags to watch out for, and the trail was marked with 6 buoys, close to areas of interest. (While we could pick out some trees that may have been scar/memory trees, we were not able to locate any of the canoe trees, perhaps we needed to venture a little further afield or a tour guide?) The bottom end of the trail ends at a couple of weirs/regulators. All up just under 10 Km, and a pleasant morning paddle. We didn’t go up-stream, but it looked like it might be possible for a little way at least.
