Yesterday, this water-loving yoga teacher completed my very first half marathon.
Instead of my bare feet standing on a rubber mat, my rubber hit the road 26,000 times.
In training for this event, I learned that, like yoga, running is existential, experiential, and experimental.
And, like my meditation practice in the beginning, running triggers me. More accurately, it sets me and them off like Yosemite Sam on a full-blown sugar high.
But just as I’ve come to understand that the poses we want to avoid are the ones we need to practice the most, I knew I had to keep lacing up and move toward what was firing.
Running felt hard. I was hurting and alone. Just like sitting in stillness was in those early days.
Fears and feelings all up in your grill.
Demanding you sit with them.
Or take steps toward them.
Until they eventually run out of steam.
And through the clarity your resilience brings, you see you are still here, although forever changed.
A HUGE thank you to the Geelong Cross Country Club for running a wonderful event I will never forget. And to my husband, Craig, for getting me there—not only by car via Bakers Delight, but for leading the way.
And now, on the valuable advice of a veteran marathoner who saw me peg-legging it to the car yesterday, "Radox, rest, and then slowly move," me and the doggos are off for a ginger walk around the block.
Looking forward to running into you sometime, be it at the pool, on the mat, or out in the big wide world.
Namaste,
Kylie

No wonder we're stressed, anxious, overwhelmed, and exhausted. We are good eggs trying our best, but many of us are consistently living in a state that is not meant for us.
Call it Fight-Flight-Freeze-Fawn, survival mode, stress, or the sympathetic nervous system—we can spend a good chunk of our waking hours in these battle conditions, even though this primal response is only meant to kick into gear when we are faced with a life-threatening situation.
Yogis have known this for millennia, and in recent decades, Western studies have confirmed that our natural state is actually in the camp opposite the 4 F's and their hot, prickly friends.
The crowd we should be hanging out with regularly includes rest and digest, curiosity, creativity, and play, relaxation, and the parasympathetic nervous system.
We've got it all backwards. We are chronically stressed and acutely relaxed when our natural state is to be acutely stressed and chronically relaxed.
This unnaturally heightened state lived daily is something I am sympathetic to (pardon the pun). In the '50s, I would have been described as having a "Type A personality." I wore my busyness, drive, multitasking, perfectionism, and stress as a badge of honor—until, one day, a feather landed and broke the camel's back.
Enter yoga.
The time on my mat not only allows me to connect with the cool, clear, calmness of my parasympathetic nervous system, but it has also given me the know-how to tap into that side of myself when I'm off my mat and out in the world.
Now, when life sends me a feather, a brick, or a truck, and I am firmly grounded in my parasympathetic nervous system, although wobbly at times, I am still standing.
Yoga is a great tool for us humanfolk to have in our arsenal, especially in the throes of modern life.
There is no one-size-fits-all, but there are many styles to choose from. Visit me at marakatayoga.com if you'd like to practise sometime.
Namaste,
Kylie 🥚💚🐣

In this passive practice, each pose is typically held for 3-5 minutes, allowing the body to relax and release tension without force. The emphasis is on stimulating the connective tissues (joints, bones, ligaments, and fascia) and enhancing the flow of Chi throughout the body.
Key benefits of Yin Yoga include:
• Improved joint mobility and flexibility
• Reduced stress and anxiety
• Enhanced energy flow throughout the body
• Increased mindfulness

A Yin Yang yoga class may start with Yin yoga to calm the mind and target the connective tissues, such as joints, bones, ligaments, and fascia, before warming up the muscles. Alternatively, the class could begin with an active Yang flow to engage the muscles and boost circulation, followed by longer-held Yin poses to relax and soothe the nervous system.
Key benefits of Yin Yang include:
• Restoring balance between body and mind
• Building strength
• Improving mobility and balance
• Enhancing flexibility and circulation
• Reducing stress
What to bring:
• Yoga mat
• Water bottle (please no glass bottles)
