I’d like to thank all the people at the central Higlands Regional Galleries & volunteers that work behind the scenes every year to put this “show” on….. it’s a wonderful cultural asset we have in our town.. opening up some wonderful opportunities for central highlands artists…I’d like to thank all the members at the Pottery club, who put up with my banging & clanging, my music & endless pacing, while I’m creating in the club with these large projects & the members who have to make space on shelves for my large works that take months to dry and then fire and decorate…my work has been greatly influenced by having the opportunity of RADF grant workshops at the pottery club a couple of years ago with Jane Du Rand & my own self funded Onggi pot workshop in New Zealand by renowned Korean master potter, Kwak Kyung Tae..( I’m a long way from mastering these techniques and shapes) … but the inspiration is there 🙏🏼 it’s fun!!🤩 the pottery club in Emerald is a great asset for central highlands community.

Congratulations to Lorelei Tuohy winning this years Acquisitive Award at the Emerald Art Awards- Lorelei's vessel beautifully merges Australian iconography with Korean pottery techniques, bringing togeather familar flora and fauna on the monumental lidded vessel. Made from clay sourced from the earth itself, the work celebrates the landscape as a source of life, honouring the plants, animals and people it continues to sustain.

Artwork on show in the Emerald Gallery until 11 September

One of our members has been busy creating a whimsical garden decoration, hand building, nice groggy clay called “ toast”… it fires a bit darker… decoration with underglaze.. now waiting until it drys full before putting in a bisque firing & maybe later a gloss? To brighten the colours… can’t wait until end result ☺️🌸

Went on a quick road trip out west to Barcaldine to drop my pot off at the annual Barcaldine art Exhibition… the end result is not so important, it’s the fun of the journey that makes playing with clay a good thing… spending the $$ in rural communities, supporting local businesses, exploring & observing the world around us… and again connecting with people in our communities 🌸…

Congratulations to two of our talented Emerald Pottery Club members on their success at the CHRC Annual Art Awards!

We are incredibly proud to have such talented artists as part of our club and celebrate their well deserved achievements.

If you haven’t already, make sure you head down to the CHRC Art Gallery and check out the exhibition. There is a fantastic display of artwork from talented artists across the region, and it’s well worth a visit.

Congratulations again! Your dedication and creativity continue to inspire us all.

Glaze Colour Testing!

One of the fun things about pottery is that the same glaze can look completely different depending on the clay body you use.

When I’m choosing a glaze for a project, I always make a little test bowl using the same clay I’ll be using for the final item. Well… this time I glazed the white clay test bowl before realising I was meant to be testing a different clay. 🤦‍♀️

Your gain is my mistake! Now we have a side-by-side comparison to show just how much the clay body can change the finished colour. It’s always worth testing before committing to a whole piece!

My ceramic cat I picked up from a marketplace in the garden of The Zenkoji Temple in Nagano city Japan…. I love to support local potters/ artists in my travels… I have a habit of also looking at how it’s made, guessing what firing temperature and glaze type 🧐was a beautiful temple too .
