Dear Wildcats Community,
This Statement is provided by the Eltham Wildcats Basketball Club in clarification of statements made in the press on Friday 17 July 2026 and Saturday 18 July 2026.
We understand the following information we are sharing with you may cause concern or distress for some participants, parents, guardians, volunteers and members of the basketball community.
During the recruitment process for the former Chief Executive Officer, the Club conducted all appropriate probity checks including a National Police Check and a Working With Children Check.
Eltham Wildcats first became aware of the matter after an anonymous whistleblower made contact with Basketball Victoria, providing unsubstantiated reports of a court case. To be clear, during their investigations, critical information was withheld from the Eltham Wildcats and Basketball Victoria, which compromised their ability to confirm the matter.
Working in a complex legal environment, Eltham Wildcats Basketball Club and Basketball Victoria acted swiftly to ascertain information regarding the matter and proactively sought clarification. The circumstances were only able to be confirmed on 10 June 2026, the day after Mr Irving had resigned for personal reasons.
We greatly appreciate the continued support of our players, parents, volunteers and staff as we navigate this difficult situation.
The safety and wellbeing of children and young people is and always will be the Club’s highest priority, and the Club is committed to taking its safeguarding and governance responsibilities seriously.
We recognise that matters of this nature can affect individuals in different ways and may be particularly challenging and hurtful for some members of our community. We strongly encourage anyone with child safety or integrity concerns to make a report via Basketball Australia’s independent reporting hotline STOPline on 1300 304 550.

Dear Wildcats Community
We understand the following information we are sharing with you may cause concern or distress for some participants, parents, guardians, volunteers and members of the basketball community.
The Eltham Wildcats Basketball Club acknowledges the outcome of court proceedings involving a former employee, which has been reported in the media today (Friday 17 July 2026).
The safety and wellbeing of children and young people is and always will be the Club's highest priority, and the Club is committed to taking its safeguarding and governance responsibilities seriously.
Richard Irving resigned from the position of Chief Executive Officer on the 9th of June effective immediately citing personal reasons. The Executive Committee has since appointed Commercial Operations Manager and Head of Integrity, Steven Chadd, to act as interim CEO until further notice.
Upon becoming aware of the charges against the former Chief Executive Officer, Eltham Wildcats Basketball Club and Basketball Victoria immediately followed all relevant safeguarding procedures. The welfare of children and young people remains at the forefront of our response.
We recognise that matters of this nature can affect individuals in different ways and may be particularly challenging and hurtful for some members of our community. Because of this, if you hear speculation or discussion amongst participants, families or members of the basketball community, we strongly encourage you to discourage it where possible.
Appropriate support services remain available for anyone who may require assistance. Anyone with integrity concerns to make a report via Basketball Australia’s independent reporting hotline STOPline on 1300 304 550 and for support to utilise the 1800 RESPECT and Lifeline (13 11 14) services.
Kind regards,
Peter Meehan - President
