As another WA Country Cricket season wraps up, many clubs continue to ask the same question: What value can an overseas player bring to our club?

In this episode of Out On The Paddock, we explore that question through the story of one of regional WA cricket's greatest overseas success stories.

Our guest is Jono Whitney, a highly respected English cricketer who arrived at a WA country club more than 20 years ago. What followed was far more than on-field success. Jono helped transform a struggling club into a premiership winner, but more importantly, he stayed, helped rebuild the club from the ground up, and played a key role in creating a culture that continues to thrive today.

His journey is a fascinating example of how the right overseas player can leave a lasting legacy that extends well beyond runs, wickets and premierships.

Vale Trevor Krink

It is with great sadness that the WA Country Cricket Board, on behalf of all WA Country Cricket stakeholders, associations, clubs, players, volunteers and supporters, acknowledges the passing of Trevor Krink.

Trevor was a highly respected umpire, mentor and volunteer whose contribution to cricket across Western Australia was both significant and far-reaching.
A passionate servant of the game, Trevor dedicated countless hours to supporting cricket at every level through his involvement with the Peel Cricket Association, Peel Junior Cricket Association, WA Suburban Turf Cricket, WA Premier Cricket, and the CSBP Junior, Senior Men’s and Senior Women’s Country Week carnivals.

Trevor always made himself available to support Country Week cricket, generously giving his time and expertise over many years. His dedication to WA Country Cricket and the legacy he leaves behind will continue to be felt for generations to come.

A highly decorated match official, Trevor's commitment, professionalism and passion for cricket were recognised when he was named Community Cricket Match Official of the Year in 2023/24. More recently, during the 2025/26 season, he proudly officiated at both the Australian Inclusion Championships and the Australian Country Championships, continuing his lifelong commitment to ensuring the game thrived for all participants.

Beyond his achievements on the field, Trevor will be remembered as a great friend, mentor and advocate for cricket. He was a dedicated student of the game who loved the craft of umpiring and generously shared his knowledge with countless officials, players and volunteers.

Those who knew Trevor speak not only of his outstanding service to cricket, but of his character — a genuine, humble and generous person who was always willing to help others and contribute to the game he loved.

On behalf of the entire WA Country Cricket community, we extend our sincere condolences to Trevor's family, friends and loved ones, as well as the wider cricket and umpiring community.

Trevor's contribution to WA Country Cricket was immense, and his legacy will be treasured by all who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him. The photos attached to this post come from the 2023 Senior Men's Country Week Grand Final played at the WACA Ground between Albany and Bunbury & Districts Cricket Association on 23/1/2023.

📣 Update: Australian Country Cricket Championships – Women’s Division (2027)

We would like to share an important update with our WA country cricket community regarding the 2027 Australian Country Cricket Championships – Women’s Division.

The Australian Country Cricket Council (ACCC) has made the difficult decision to amend the hosting arrangements for 2027. Unfortunately, the Women’s Championships will no longer be hosted in the Busselton–Margaret River region and will instead be held in Country Victoria alongside the Men’s Division.

This is a deeply disappointing outcome. We know how much hosting national events means to our players, volunteers, clubs and regional communities, and we share the frustration that Western Australia will not have this opportunity in 2027.

While sponsorship discussions were ongoing, no formal agreement could be secured within the required timeframe. Combined with the current economic challenges - including rising fuel prices and significantly increased flight costs - it was ultimately not financially viable to deliver a standalone Women’s Championships in WA next year.

Importantly, this decision does not diminish Western Australia’s standing as a preferred host. The ACCC remains strongly committed to exploring every opportunity to bring the Women’s Australian Country Cricket Championships back to the Busselton–Margaret River region in 2028, subject to appropriate commercial and financial support.

We would also like to sincerely thank the Busselton Margaret River Cricket Association for their outstanding delivery of the 2026 Men’s Championships, which set a national benchmark for country cricket events. Our gratitude also extends to our valued Government partners - the WA State Government, Shire of Augusta Margaret River, and City of Busselton - for their continued support of country cricket in our region.

Thank you to our community for your understanding and ongoing support. We remain committed to strengthening country cricket across Australia and will continue to keep stakeholders informed as future hosting opportunities are progressed.
