Over my years of coaching, I’ve noticed something surprising.

Many of the strongest leaders I meet don’t struggle with 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆.
They struggle with 𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

They are thoughtful, experienced, and deeply committed to their work. They’re leading complex projects, managing stakeholders, navigating people dynamics — often while 𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙚𝙩𝙡𝙮 𝙘𝙖𝙧𝙧𝙮𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙚𝙢𝙤𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙬𝙚𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙥.

And yet, behind closed doors, many will say the same thing:

The usual reflex to consume more leadership theory won't cut it this time!

You need 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆.
You need 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿.
You need a place where you can speak honestly, reflect deeply, and strengthen how you lead — without burning out in the process.

𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 is often assumed to be 𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙬𝙚 𝙚𝙞𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 — 𝙤𝙧 𝙙𝙤𝙣’𝙩.

In my experience, 𝙞𝙩’𝙨 𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙬𝙚 𝙗𝙪𝙞𝙡𝙙.

𝘕𝘰𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘣𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘦,
𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘸𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘪𝘵.

In the water sector, 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 is part of the role — shifting priorities, complex stakeholders, and decisions that carry real impact.

𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙄’𝙫𝙚 𝙤𝙗𝙨𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝 𝙘𝙤𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨:

Leaders who sustain their performance over time aren’t simply “𝘱𝘶𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩.”
They’re practicing intentional ways of responding under pressure.

A few that I often come back to:

• 𝗣𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴
Creating space, even briefly, allows for more considered, strategic decisions.

• 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝗷𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁
Not every challenge is a reflection of capability — often, it’s context.

• 𝗥𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹
Clarity reduces overwhelm.

• 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗿𝗵𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗺
Resilience requires energy — and energy needs to be replenished.

These are not 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗳𝗶𝘅𝗲𝘀.
They are 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 that 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲, 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 over time.

This is where 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 plays an important role.

𝙉𝙤𝙩 𝙗𝙮 𝙧𝙚𝙢𝙤𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙪𝙧𝙚 — that's impossible — but 𝗯𝘆 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗻𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆.

In coaching, the most valuable moments are often the quiet ones.

Not defined by a single question, but by the space created for 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿, 𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

It’s in these moments that leaders begin to notice what’s really happening —
𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙢𝙖𝙮 𝙗𝙚 𝙝𝙤𝙡𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙗𝙖𝙘𝙠,
𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜,
𝙤𝙧 𝙣𝙖𝙫𝙞𝙜𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙨𝙪𝙗𝙩𝙡𝙚 𝙢𝙞𝙨𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙣𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩.

From there, more 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 can emerge.

This is the work of 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴.

Not fixing.
Not directing.
But creating the conditions for 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽.

Early in my career as a senior team member, then Team Leader, I thought I needed to puff my chest out, win awards and 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝗺𝘆 𝗲𝗴𝗼 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗳𝘂𝗹.

𝙏𝙝𝙖𝙩’𝙨 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙢𝙮 𝙡𝙤𝙪𝙙𝙚𝙧, 𝙜𝙧𝙚𝙮𝙚𝙧 𝙝𝙖𝙞𝙧𝙚𝙙 𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙨 𝙬𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙙𝙤𝙞𝙣𝙜. 𝙏𝙝𝙖𝙩’𝙨 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙗𝙚𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙢𝙤𝙙𝙚𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙢𝙚.

But it always felt icky, it felt forced and exhausting for me to emulate that.

Over the years though I was fortunate to work with Leaders who understood what 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 was.

They didn’t need to use their ego to get what wanted, they didn’t need to ‘𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙚’ anyone.

They were connected to their 𝙫𝙖𝙡𝙪𝙚𝙨. They were quietly confident in challenging old, outdated processes. They used 𝙖𝙪𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙘 𝙧𝙚𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙥𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙗𝙚𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙞𝙤𝙪𝙧 to create a shared vision. They modelled a better way. And they enabled others to be amazing, rewarding them meaningfully when they were.

Now that I regularly coach leaders, these reflections guide my practice. I can see, hear & feel when my coachee is behaving in alignment with the kind of transformational, authentic and values driven leader they want to be. I can gently challenge them, empower them and enable them to be even better.

𝘕𝘰 𝘱𝘶𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘥 𝘶𝘱 𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘵.
𝙅𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙖 𝙛𝙚𝙬 𝙜𝙧𝙚𝙮 𝙝𝙖𝙞𝙧𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙖𝙣 𝙖𝙪𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙘 𝙥𝙖𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙤 𝙚𝙢𝙥𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙗𝙚 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙣 𝙗𝙚𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧.

A common pattern I notice with the high achievers I coach is their 𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙮 𝙩𝙤 𝙧𝙪𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙣 𝙧𝙚𝙛𝙡𝙚𝙘𝙩 𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙢𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙨.

There's a 𝗵𝗮𝗯𝗶𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗺, 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗮 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗳 that a 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿, entwined with a sense of 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀. These are not necessarily conscious choices - 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺'𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘯 𝘴𝘶𝘣𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘤𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘴 𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘥𝘥𝘦𝘥 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦, 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘳 𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘨𝘶𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘥 𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴.

However, when I ask them how they would treat a friend with a similar challenge they never say they'd use the same harsh words or tone with their friend.

So why is it 𝗢𝗞 to say or 𝗱𝗼 these things to ourselves?

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙪𝙡𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙨𝙪𝙘𝙝 𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙨𝙝 𝙧𝙪𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙞𝙨:
* a downward shame spiral
* stress responses and lack of learning
* comparisonitis which then fuels the feelings of inadequacy
* exhaustion
* foggy thinking.

I know this pattern all too well - 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙢𝙮𝙨𝙚𝙡𝙛 - not just my clients.

What would happen if 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗯𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀, 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 instead - that very same kindness, compassion and empathy as if to a friend or loved one?

Watching another cohort of Water Leaders investing time, energy and attention into their leadership development recently sparked some reflection on my own and my coachees’ growth over the years.

A common thread I see is a shift that happens when we stop trying to 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙫𝙚 ourselves as leaders — and started choosing to 𝙜𝙧𝙤𝙬.

To do this we need to cultivate 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀; noticing where we felt stretched, defensive, or uncertain — and leaning in with curiosity rather than judgment. And we intentionally adopt a 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗲𝘁.

What I’ve noticed from coaching leaders over the past 15+ years is that the most resilient leaders are those who commit to continuous learning from the inside out.

Here are a few practices that I’ve noticed:

𝟭. 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆.
When they feel challenged, they ask: 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩 𝘮𝘦?

𝟮. 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲.
A setback is feedback. It’s data — not a definition of who you are.

𝟯. 𝗦𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗼𝘄𝗻.
Growth accelerates when we invite diverse thinking and listen deeply.

𝟰. 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴.
Pausing creates space for intentional leadership rather than habitual response.

𝟱. 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.
Learning and adaptation require energy. Energy requires care.

A growth mindset isn’t loud. It’s steady. It’s intentional. It’s the willingness to evolve without abandoning your values.

𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀.
𝘐𝘵’𝘴 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘺 𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘦.

Leadership comes with pressure — decisions, responsibility, competing demands. Feeling stressed at times doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong or that you're broken. It means you’re 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻.

In my coaching work, I see this often: resilient leaders aren’t those who avoid pressure situations, but those who practice how to 𝗽𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲, 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲-𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗿 when things feel overwhelming. That capacity — to stay grounded and return to centre — is something we can learn and strengthen.

If today feels full, let this be your reminder: you don’t need to push through everything. Sometimes the most effective leadership move is to slow down and reset.

Have you ever found yourself working in a team where communication had broken down?

Where people were capable, committed, and working hard — yet conversations felt difficult, trust felt fragile, or collaboration wasn't happening?

It's a common challenge in workplaces, particularly in complex and high-pressure environments.

Over the years, I've become increasingly interested in what sits beneath these dynamics.

Not the technical skills.
Not the organisational charts.

But the human elements of leadership.

Things like self-awareness, emotional intelligence, trust, communication, and the ability to navigate differences constructively.

I've learned that leadership is rarely just about delivering outcomes.

It's also about creating the conditions where people can contribute, collaborate, and do their best work together.

This curiosity is what focused my coaching practice on self leadership.

Today, I have the privilege of working with leaders who want to strengthen not only what they do, but own who they are and how they lead.

Leaders who understand that sustainable success is built on these strong foundations.
