Weekly Wrap finals round 1 edition 💛🩵💙

What a weekend of finals! Mentone was absolutely blessed to have 5/7 home game finals across Saturday and Sunday. The weather was amazing, the sun was shining, and it was great to see Pantherland packed with so many supporters across the weekend. We also loved seeing all the signs around the club, true Panther spirit!

A huge congratulations to our Women’s Metro and Men’s Pennant B teams, who both secured their spots in the Grand Final.

Our Women’s Metro put on an incredible performance, coming away with a 2-0 win against southern, with Madam President slotting both goals with ease. The Men’s Pennant B had a very intense battle against Camberwell, with the game finishing 1-1 at full time. We backed our boys in the shootouts, and they delivered with a very impressive shootout win to book their place in the Grand Final.

We also have to congratulate our Women’s Premier League Reserves, who had an amazing game against MCC, coming away with a 2-1 win. A huge shoutout to Grace for an incredible stroke save and Hailey Crebbin and Izzy Torrington on their great goals to help secure the win.

Our Women’s Pennant A also move through to the next round of finals after a great 1-0 win against Footscray, thanks to a fantastic early goal from Lyndal Crisp. Good luck to our Premier Reserve and Pennant A ladies this weekend!

Sadly, our U12s, Men’s Metro and Men’s Pennant E just fell short and their finals campaigns have come to an end. However, what a season they have all had, and making finals is an incredible achievement. We are so proud of every team and everything they have achieved this season. Also another stroke to mention… who saw Sam Forbes great save 🔥🔥

Good luck to everyone for the remainder of the finals, and an even bigger good luck to our Men’s Open, who take on Doncaster tonight at 7:30pm and also our Men’s 40+ B who take on Dandenong tonight at 7:30pm for their spot in next week’s Grand Final.

We can’t believe how quickly this season has flown by! Some of our Panthers celebrated their final game of the year in our yellow and two blues for the season, while others fought right until the final whistle to secure their spot in finals!

We had some fantastic results over the weekend, including an incredible 11-2 win for Men’s Pennant B against PEGS and a 3-0 win for Men’s Pennant E against Doncaster. On the junior side, our U18s closed out their season in style with an awesome 6-0 win against Kingston. Even better, our goalie Georgia stepped up to take a stroke and secured the goal! Nothing like having a 1 on 1 goalie action! 😂

We also had a very special milestone, with Ben Bouwer umpiring his very first Women’s Pennant A match. He did an amazing job, well done, Ben!

Finals fixtures are officially locked in and our Panthers are ready for Round 1 of finals! 💛💙🩵

We’re so lucky to have multiple home games this weekend, so there’s no better time to get down to the club and cheer on our teams!

This week’s and the last Meet the Member Monday of the season is Stevie O’Brien! 🐾

Stevie was introduced to hockey at a young age after his dad told him he used to hate Auskick. His uncle and godfather, who played hockey, suggested he give it hockey go instead. Stevie came along to one of our Hookin2Hockey days and instantly he fell in love with the sport! Fast forward to today, and Stevie is part of our Premier League Reserves squad, while also getting plenty of opportunities to play in the Premier League side. His first XI game came against MCC this year. He went into the game feeling ready, with a few nerves, but was definitely more excited than anything else. Stevie hopes to continue along this pathway and become a permanent firsts player, particularly in our Premier League side.

Stevie found his way to Mentone Hockey Club through his love of cricket. He was already playing cricket with Mentone and St Bede’s, where his uncle played, but when there were no U8 hockey teams available at St Bede’s, he found himself at Mentone, and we’re so glad he and his family did! Stevie’s favourite thing about Mentone is getting to grow up alongside the people he’s met through the club, and he hopes to play hockey with them for the rest of his career.

Stevie’s longest-running teammate is definitely his brother, Matt O’Brien. The pair were thrown together when Hockey Victoria introduced a new rule in U12s. Their only option was Matt stepping in as a goalie, something he apparently hated at the time, but probably appreciates a little more now!

Stevie’s biggest Mentone HC idol is Ben Rogalsky. As Stevie says, “what a guy!” He loved watching Ben play growing up and believes his communication is one of the most overlooked parts of his game.

Stevie has also had plenty of representative opportunities throughout his hockey journey. He played SSV in 2021, was selected in the VIC Development Team in 2022, and has represented the Sharks at Junior State Championships from 2022–2026. We can’t wait to see where his hockey journey takes him next! 💛💙🩵

The home and away season for our seniors and juniors has officially wrapped up, and our finals teams are locked in! 🐾

We also have our Men’s Open and Men’s 40+ BSE Masters teams locked in for finals, with one more game to go as they fight to climb higher on the ladder. Our Women’s 35+ Masters team is also battling for their spot in finals, with their final home and away game this Wednesday. Good luck ladies!

Good luck to all our Panthers heading into finals, and enjoy a well-deserved break to those whose seasons have finished. But the job isn’t done yet! Let’s get behind these teams and cheer them on this weekend! 💛🩵💙

What another successful Family Day! Our juniors had the biggest smiles on their faces once again during this special day.

Our juniors got the opportunity to meet our Premier League players, grab a badge of their player, get it signed and then play a half-time match together! Even better that the WPL could sing the song with their juniors!

They also got to meet our Panther Cobras down at the pitch for a little Q&A, watch them play, enjoy some face painting and have a blast on the awesome jumping castle.

A huge thank you to everyone who played a part in making the day so special, including Matt from Mornington Jumping Castle Hire, Evie Roe for the face painting, Gracie, Zara and Emma from the Cobras, Matthew Elliott for sponsoring the day, Katie Obrien for the player badges and everyone else who supported the day running smoothly.

We hope to bring this experience back in the 2027 season, as it’s such an amazing opportunity for our club, our senior players and, most importantly, our amazing and talented juniors. Please keep an eye out next year and ensure your junior signs up!
