Big weeks need a big session! It’s been a heavy week mentally this week, with news of one of my past clients passing away and a work colleague going through a battle of his own, my emotions were tested.

But I took it where I take everything that tests me and poured into the bars, the weights, the gym and left every ounce of it there knowing that I walked out cleansed of a week that handed me news I had no control over.

Sometimes, sessions are just for emptying the tank and mental load, and sometimes it’s for the pleasure of testing yourself.

Lift heavy and lift often. ;)

Some absolute spanners wanted this event cancelled today because it was raining, yes it was wet but honestly it wasn’t really all that cold.

The amount of effort that goes into setting up this event for schools to either take their students or for parents to take them to participate is huge, there are some kids who start travelling at 7am to be there to compete. Imagine rocking up and missing the post that says “sorry we have cancelled the event due to a little rain” because some parent whinged about it.

How do kids build resilience!? They do so by doing hard things like cross country in weather like we had today. Now if you don’t want your kid to compete in this weather then by all means pull them from the event but who suffers in the long term? The kid does because the less challenging environments they’re exposed to they don’t learn how to navigate through tough moments. Hard choices now make easier choices later.

This isn’t just about competing, this is also about kids being in environments that aren’t just challenging but uplifting, the amount of kids who had run that came to watch other kids run and cheer, encourage and uplift those from first to last is what it’s about to.

Cross Country is an all weather winter sport, it’s supposed to be, it’s what makes it tough, it’s what makes it challenging, it’s a sport that kids who thrive at it can become more than just a good runner for their school it can help promote resilience, growth, strength physically and mentally.

Note: I understand that some kids are immune compromised and those kids should be protected where possible, and at the end of the day you have a choice to allow your child to compete if they have been selected by their school, so why should the many kids who love it have to miss out because it’s raining.

Make it make sense.

I was asked the other day “do you enjoy the role of president”

The answer was simple, yes for everything it brings it brings to me the ability to be me around these kids who just enjoy participating and having fun.

It brings me to my element where uplifting, encouraging and supporting little humans find themselves through sport, being able to be someone they know will cheer for them no matter their ability, their weaknesses and their strengths.

As much as I’m in it for my own kids, I’m all in for the other 80 odd registered athletes. To help them, to support them and to uplift them through athletics.

I want this sport to grow in Tasmania, we have some incredible talent just a sprint away, just a throw away and just a jump away and we have some kids who just purely enjoy being around it.

We wrapped up the last session for this blokes Christmas holidays with a solid one, topped off with a rum on the rocks to bid farewell to thee until next Christmas.

I’m incredibly grateful for many things in life but to know that when I’ve poured my all into helping someone achieve a goal they have wanted they want to come home on holidays and lock in still fills me with all good things.

TSF isn’t a big deal with fancy ads, fancy equipment but its the big deal you’ve been looking for because TSF will always provide you the place and coaching you need to help you get what you want.

Thanks Lachie, I’m incredibly proud of you but equally grateful that you continue to choose TSF while you are home. Safe travels my friend and I can’t wait for next Christmas.

Training young athletes…. Keys 🔑

It’s a delicate process especially if you’re a parent coach and knowing when to push and when not to push.

The art of training kids is no different to training adults, the key is to listen to them, listen to their questions and equally teaching them how to listen to their bodies.

Always give clear instructions and guidance, allow them to absorb and allow them to search within themselves.

Avoid unnecessary training methods and schedules, after all we want to teach them how to love the process of continuous improvement.

Ask them more questions than they ask you, seek to know how they feel, what they feel, and where they want to improve.

You can be firm and fair at the same time but know where your line in the sand is, as I said you want them to love the process.

They might be little humans, but 9/10 times they are brutally honest, so don’t fear asking for feedback on your own performance.

Over training kids can be detrimental to their growth both physically and mentally, especially girls, high demands in training can set them backwards or put extra strain on their bodies development through puberty.

As I said and reiterate, being a parent coach requires self awareness and discipline on how you respond, treat your young athlete like you’d treat someone else’s kid.

Yesterday Charlotte did 5x100’s and 3x200’s and we called it after that, because that was enough for her and she got the most out of herself in that workout, we worked on stride and continued working on using those arms.

The feedback at the end was - it was great, I ran faster after we adjusted my stride and it was noticeable in my pace and the time I got for that rep as it was my quickest rep.

Guess who’s home for Christmas!

Incredibly grateful that the big lad is home and messaged to book in some holiday sessions.

Training this fella is always fun and knowing how hard he worked to get to where he is and still values TSF highly enough to want to fit in sessions with me is humbling.

Hey! How are you? Good? That’s great, I’m just here to give a quiet little update about TSF.

While I use this image of myself today, it actually sparked the text that you’re about to read.

You see I’ve been asked a few times, by a few people here and there, far and wide, what’s actually going on.

Well, while I admit I kept the last post very vague and open to interpretation, but I’m still operating. Yes, I’m still chasing the dream and chasing my goals as a businessman, coach, dad, husband.

As I look at this image I see a man full of drive and passion for all things good for the community. As I’ve said to those who have asked, I haven’t lost that, I didn’t lose that, but I did lose what I was doing and what I do is highly important in the process of why I do it.

I’ve found it, it’s back and I want to hold on that, just like the man in the photo here, the president of this great little club, he knows what, why and how he is going to achieve it. As for TSF, it’s not over, it never was over.

So while I had to say goodbye to one part of the journey it opened me up to finding that in which I lost.

So watch this space if you will, watch if you want, but know this TSF isn’t going anywhere.

The end of this chapter is bitter but sweet, the journey will take many twists and turns while some turns you miss, some you can take knowing that it’s not about the final destination of where you want to be, but in fact soaking up that journey there.

During what some would consider crazy times “cough Covid cough” I took my business and expanded it out while many others feared it, I embraced it.

During that time I peaked and hit some massive goals, especially a financial one I wanted to hit just to see if I could and I did, as a family we achieved that elusive dream many chase and purchased our first home and without taking that turn on the journey to expand we might not have.

Now as that chapter closes, and the new one begins, I can’t tell you what’s in store yet but when that corner comes you’ll know, you’ll see me coming.

But right now, know that the fire within still burns very hot and the last few weeks I’ve found something I’d thought I’d misplaced 6 months ago and damn it feels good. The passion to help others win their race is still strong.

For the ones that cheer me on you are the legends, thanks ☺️

It’s so good to be outside ripping into a solid session that makes you take your body to places that you didn’t know existed.
