Day two of the Club World Champs brought the first placement game against Los Angeles Team Handball Club - a first time participant who however brought some high calibre players such as Danish goalkeeper Frank Krone Mikkelsen (awarded player of the match) and Slovenian centre back Andraz Velkavrh (top scorer at 10 goals).

To cut a long story short, this was not a great game for the lions, and the end result of 17:28 was bitterly disappointing. Against a clever and robust 5:1 defense, our attacking game was stuttering for 60 minutes. The team paid dearly for a very poor attacking performance in first 20 minutes, with just 2 goals on the score board, and 9 received.

As usual, the boys in blue and gold would not give up though, fighting back to a 7:12 half time result, and still being very much in the game at 13:17 after 45 minutes. At this point, the batteries seemed to rapidly deplete though, driving the number of errors up and handing LA a few welcome gifts. The experienced US team accepted thankfully, and drove home a deserved win.

While our team was solid in defense throughout, and certainly put on the fight one would expect, our attack lacked energy, grit and determination, topped off by an unhealthy number of errors. Certainly not what the game plan was.

There are some good news in this story too however - this was only the first leg of two placement games, so on Sunday at 11:00 local time (10:00 in 🇪🇺, 18:00 in 🇦🇺) we have a rendez-vous with LA again. And we reckon it's time for redemption!

In our first game of the Club World Championships 2026 we faced Veszprém Handball Club - one of the hardest teams to get drawn against, given their pedigree and current form.
Our boys got into the game well, countering Veszprem's goals immediately with some of our own. But as soon as we started to make mistakes in attack after about 5 minutes, we got ruthlessly punished with counter attack goals. After 20 minutes, the game had well and truly slipped from our hands, in the face of a 10-goal gap.
In the second half, we managed to improve attacking efficiency significantly, with some excellent moves, better patience and decision making in attack and a fighting spirit which never relented. Still, the end result of 19:45 was not pretty. But the performance in the second half let our boys leave the court with their chins up, and plenty of experience gained. Now, we will play Los Angeles Team Handball Club tomorrow - with a real chance to get a result!

They say that 'behind every great man, there is a strong woman'. Well, behind our group of great men, there is an extra strong woman - our team manager Daf Tex!

Usually leading the charge with our women's team and striking fear into opponents as a left back, Daphne is on her third tour taking on the not-so-small challenge of managing our men's squad. And somehow, she's making it look easy.

With exceptional organisational talent, a calm head, plenty of handball know-how and just the right amount of authority, Daphne keeps players and coaches focused on what matters most: performing on court.

Thank you, Daf, for everything you do for our club. A true lioness 💛🦁💙 and one of Sydney Uni HC's all-time greats.

Some people come and go. Others become part of the club's identity. Sebastien Traverso belongs firmly in the second category.

A veteran of the Australian national team and a true Sydney Uni legend, Seb has been wearing our colours for more than 20 years. He was a member of the historic 2012 squad that became the first Sydney Uni team to qualify for the IHF Super Globe, and somehow continues to set the standard when it comes to fitness, athleticism, and professionalism. The years keep passing, but Seb doesn't seem to notice.

While Seb has long taken the role of assistant coach and will be at Chris Scholl's side to lead the team from the bench, Seb's training performance is still at a level which makes it hard not to consider him in a playing role... if injury strikes and the squad gets depleted, we know where to find you!

Thank you, Seb, for your loyalty, leadership, and countless contributions over the years. You are a true club icon and the Sydney Uni OG.

Please consider making a contribution for Seb and the team:
