Today, Senpai Caitlin completed her grading to Sandan. She did an outstanding job over several weeks, despite balancing the commitments of university and work.

Caitlin started her karate training at just five years old and has now been training continuously for 15 years.

It is quite special for one of our young students to begin with us as a child and continue their journey into adulthood, progressing through to Sandan. Only Sensei Max, Sensei Kyra, and now Senpai Caitlin have trained continuously from childhood and achieved this rank.

We are very proud of Caitlin's commitment, perseverance and achievement.

Congratulations and well done. Osu!

Tonight, I was very sad to learn of the passing of Grand Tuhon Leo T. Gaje Jr.

My sister Nornale and I were very fortunate to train directly and privately under Master Leo from 1977–1979 in New York. It was a formative time for Filipino Martial Arts in America, and Master Leo was one of the pioneers responsible for introducing and developing FMA in the United States, especially on the East Coast.

Looking back at these old photographs brings back many memories of those early years and reminds me how fortunate we were to have learned directly from him.

Master Leo was an important part of my early martial arts journey, and the knowledge and experiences he shared with us have remained with me throughout my life.

We are very saddened to hear of his passing and are praying for his soul and for his family during this difficult time.

May Grand Tuhon Leo T. Gaje Jr. forever rest in peace.

On Wednesdays and Fridays at 6:30am, the Morning Crew gathers at the dojo to train together.

Led by Kyoshi Mark, this group has grown steadily over the years to become one of the anchor groups of our dojo.

There is something special about our senior black belts choosing to start their day this way, turning up early, training hard, and sharing the floor with one another week after week.

A wonderful part of the Jin Sei Ryū Karate-Do community. Osu!

Today we had the very special opportunity to welcome Kaicho Grant Campbell of Ryūei-ryū Karate to our dojo for a seminar.

Kaicho Grant is also my older brother in budō. We first met at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York in 1974, when we were both part of Kyokushinkai. More than five decades later, he remains one of the relatively few people who has personally witnessed so much of my budō journey.

Today, Kaicho Grant generously shared his extensive knowledge and experience with our students, teaching self-defence applications and the kata Niseishi, followed by an open Q&A session.

At the conclusion of the seminar, we were honoured to present him with a nunti personally made by Kancho Johanes Wong. It was a particularly meaningful way to mark the occasion.

My sincere thanks to Kancho Wong, Mrs Wong and Lucy Wong for their friendship and support, and to Rick Cunningham and the students from MOKKA, and Sensei Chris and the students from BKI, for joining us and sharing the training.

And, of course, my deepest thanks to Kaicho Grant for giving so generously of his time, knowledge and experience.

We both remarked afterward how training together again was special and spent a quiet moment to remember our other budo brother, Shuseki Shihan Oliver.

There is something very special about being able to stand on the dojo floor more than 50 years after first meeting, still practising, still learning, and still sharing budō with the next generation.

We’re very pleased to announce that we’re in the final phase of the next stage in the innovation of our student online learning academy:

Jin Sei Ryu Karate-Dō Gihō Taikei 技法大系
The Technical Library of Jin Sei Ryu Karate-Dō

Thank you to Senpai Ben Noblet, who has generously shared his special skills and spent countless hours helping to bring this work to life. He has worked closely with me for several years on how our technical material can be made more accessible, useful and relevant to our students’ ongoing training.

The Gihō Taikei brings together our techniques, combinations, self-defence, kata, weapons and other syllabus material into one structured and searchable resource. Members will be able to explore material by belt level, review everything up to their current level, focus on particular areas of training, and build their own training sessions.

More importantly, this will be a living technical resource for active Jin Sei Ryu members internationally. It can continue to grow and evolve as new material, explanations, videos and teaching resources are developed and added over time.

Eventually, the Gihō Taikei will replace our current separate library of separately written syllabus material and videos, bringing them together into a single evolving technical reference for Jin Sei Ryu Karate-Dō.

As always, the purpose of the technology is not to replace training in the dojo, but to provide our students with better ways to study, prepare, review and deepen their understanding of what we practice together.

The longer I practise Budō, the more I believe that one of its most important lessons is humility.

Budō gives us a framework to examine ourselves. It asks us to think about our own character, integrity, discipline, respect, loyalty and behaviour.

But I don't believe that gives any of us the right to judge another person's Budō.

After more than five decades of training, I have met and trained with many martial artists from different styles, organisations, cultures and generations. We don't always agree. I don't always agree with my own teachers, friends or students.

That's okay.

Two sincere Budōka can face the same situation and make very different decisions. One may believe that loyalty means staying with an organisation. Another may believe that integrity means leaving. One may believe strongly in preserving what they were taught. Another may believe they have a responsibility to develop and grow.

I don't think one decision necessarily makes someone a better Budōka than the other.

As we become more senior, we accumulate years of training, rank, titles and experience. We teach more people, and people may listen more carefully to what we have to say.

But perhaps this is exactly when humility becomes even more important.

There is a big difference between saying:

“This is what Budō has taught me.”

and saying:

“This is what Budō means, and therefore I can judge your Budō.”

Rank gives us greater responsibility. Experience gives us perspective. But neither means that our understanding of Budō is the only understanding.

For me, the principles of Budō should make me look more closely at my own character, my own integrity and my own behaviour.

They should not give me a reason to judge someone else's, and vice versa.

Perhaps that is one of the challenges of practising Budō for a lifetime. The longer we train and the more senior we become, the greater our responsibility to remain humble.

We bow to our teachers. We bow to our students. We bow to each other.

None of us owns Budō.

Early this morning we completed our Black Belt promotion. It was an outstanding promotion over 4 weeks covering all aspects of the syllabus from white belt material onward, culminating in 40 rounds of sparring. It was amazing to watch this group overcome their personal challenges to complete this promotion. Congratulations to Senpai Meg (nidan), Senpai Billy, Senpai Maria and Senpai Caio on your promotion. Osu!
