With reduced pasture quality and increased energy used to stay warm, winter can change your horse's body condition more quickly than you think.

Ranging from 1 (poor/emaciated) to 9 (extremely fat/obese), the Henneke Body Condition Scoring System can help determine a horse's overall body condition and whether they are underweight, sitting at an ideal weight or overweight. Information gained from checking your horse can furthermore help you to assess and decide on appropriate feeding and nutritional care.

- Withers
- Shoulders
- Ribs
- Loin
- Tailhead

With an easy numbering system:
❎ 1 - 3: Poor to Thin
✅ 4 - 5: Moderate to Ideal
❎ 6 - 7: Fleshy to Fat
❎ 8 - 9: Extremely Fat / Obese

Does your horse need extra iron?

No! Iron is already highly prevalent in many feeds and pastures. It is the one supplement your horse DOES NOT need more of!

Iron affects the absorption of other important minerals, particularly copper and zinc (which are important minerals for metabolic health and hoof quality). It can lead to mineral imbalances which can cause inflammatory issues, metabolic issues and aggravate insulin resistance, affecting the immune system.

Too much iron is toxic to your horse and can upset the balance of minerals it needs. It can weaken your horse's immune system and cause a cascade of further issues. Without adding iron into diets, it is already excessively available in their pastures and water. There is no need to add more.
