Did You Know
To be honest I am running out of little history titbits so if any body has sometihng they want to share please message me with the details and I can add it to these posts.
This one is a bit recent. We had a race meeting yesterday (Sunday) with some very fine and close racing. All the drivers are honing skills getting ready for the upcoming championships at the end of September when we invite our fellow racers from Albany to join us.
I have attached a couple of videos for you guys to enjoy. Some of our experienced racers as well as some newer driver and a visitor going for a ride in the Tandy.

Before this social media thing become big, we used to do displays at all the car shows and some events held during the year when we could. We would get some members together and set up a stand to meet the public, talk about Soapbox, hand out flyers with our details, and try and gain new members. I did a few of these myself and had a wonderful time meeting the people. In fact, it was one of these displays that got me back into Soapbox when I attended a car show in 2015, the same year Frozen come out, after that chance meeting I joined my son up and the Perth Soapbox Club became a huge part of my life, and I love every minute of it.

Did You Know
A few years ago, to put to rest the argument of weights and
people saying heavier is better the club would run an ‘All
Up Weight’ day. The boxes were weighed as usual, then the
driver was weighted. When added together the heaviest
combination was then used, and everyone could add weight
to their boxes to achieve this maximum weight. The weight
had to be secure and safe. The result was the drivers
that had success normally had success on these days as well.
Thus, concluding that the combined weight of driver and
soapbox means very little. Not sure when the day was
cancelled but I believe it also had issues of some drivers
adding 50+kg to their soapbox and not being able to handle it.

Did You Know
Fun fact – When the junior track record was set by Marco Giovannini in 2007, it was the same year that the current junior track record holder was born. 12 years later in 2019 it was reset by Jack Ward in his last year as a junior.
To honor this milestone, we tried to get Marco to present a trophy to Jack but unfortunately, he was unavailable at the time. However, his mother Giulianna offered to present the trophy on Marco’s behalf to Jack.
A wonderful example of history meeting the present and we were privileged to have Giulianna there. We love when past members came back and say hello, see how the club is growing and tell us some of the stories from the past. Without history we have no future

Did You Know
There were at one stage 5 soapbox clubs in Western Australia, these were Albany, Perth, Esperance (1977 - 2014), Boddington (1997 - 1999), and Armadale (1988 - 2005ish). I can't find much information on the Armadale club and not sure if the Boddington club ever held a championship, maybe someone can add information in the comments. Championships were held throughout the year with members attending each clubs events.

Did You Know
In 2005 the W.A.S.C.C/Hill Climb Club resurfaced the track
to be used for hill climbs resulting in the smooth and
professional surface we now race on. This new surface
resulted in new track records being set. The club is
always looking to make improvements to our track as we
remain the only club in Australia to have a dedicated race
track with stating gates.

Did You Know.......TRACK CONSTRUCTION AT WANNEROO TRACK.

In 1981 the daunting task that members faced was to turn a rough washed out limestone track into one suitable for Soapbox racing. So, on Mother's day, May 1981, saw all members gather at the track for the official start of works. Channel 7 filmed the work and showed it on the news that night.

The W.A.S.C.C. through the help of Mr Bob Biltoft allowed the club to use its facilities and heavy machinery. Bill Roberts and Tony Holland did initial groundwork, scraping limestone off the top car park area to build up the base course of the track. Once the base course was prepared the track had to be sealed. Most of this work was done by hand, bitumen was pumped from drums using a hand pump and sprayed onto the limestone, blue metal was shovelled into trailers then spread onto the wet bitumen and then rolled. A section about 3m long and the width of the track was done at a time. The total length for a weekend would depend on the number of members who turned up on the day. Slowly section by section the track was sealed.

A true indication of what can be done by people dedicated and committed to a cause and why we still do it today. ‘We do it for the kids’
