Why I Stopped Running With Headphones- Presence #shorts 13/08/2026

Why I Stopped Running With Headphones - Presence

Running without headphones isn't about what I gave up. It's about what I'm finally present for.

The Orthodox tradition calls this nepsis — watchfulness. St. Hesychios the Priest: "Watchfulness is a continual fixing and halting of thought at the entrance to the heart."

When the music comes off, the run stops being background and becomes prayer. Every breath, every footfall, every sound on the trail — attention, gathered and offered back to God.

This isn't a rule for your run. It's an invitation. Turn it off one morning and ask: what do I hear?

Run with faith and purpose.

We’re nearly there! 19 to go to send me to my suffering. Why not share with someone who’d get a kick out of watching this crash test dummy at work? THE DEBATE ENDS HERE | The Hardest Parkrun in Australia

I flew 2,000 kilometres to run Weipa. Nearly missed the start!

Ignored 2 alarms. Woke alarmed. By time I was ready to leave - 6:15. Start line 4km away. No car. No taxi. Only one option.

In 89% humidity soup, I walked half way then had to run nearly 2km just to get to the start on time — with five minutes to spare — and then had to run the actual parkrun.

A warm parkrun in a number of ways. Warm climate, warm reception and warm parkrun community.

Shout outs to:
Natasha (thanks for coming up for chat after recognising me),
Suzy the turnaround marshal for the mad cheers & encouragement,
RD Melanie & Co. for informative post run chat,
Tamlyn, who wasn’t there this Saturday but stopped her bike ride when she recognised me when I was walking in the afternoon and invited me to a morning run club run on Sunday morning (sorry I didn’t make it but the invitation was very appreciated).

Weipa. Maybe the most remote parkrun in Queensland. And I nearly slept through it. 😅
