The perfect kick-in … and by the concentration shown by the positioning of the young lad’s right hand, I tend to believe he was using his non-preferred kicking foot !!!

FootballSSG’s rules require that sideline kick-ins (we don’t have throw-ins) are taken with the planted foot not being completely within the field of play. Outside the field of play is okay, as is on the line (as is the case in this photo).

Why?

Because it causes players to try and try again to kick with a foot that they might otherwise never try to kick with. Ultimately, this leads to players being competent using both of their feet.

Do you remember how proud your child was when they were first able to write their name?

They had to practice and practice to be able to do so ... and they were absolutely chuffed with themselves when they could do it ... and all they wanted to do next was show YOU their achievement ... they wanted you to be proud of them.

FootballSSG's rules have been specifically designed to encourage kids of all ages (even 55 year old kids like me) to practice skills that they're not yet great at. With practice comes improvement, with improvement comes self-confidence and pride.

I cannot tell you how pleasing it is to watch a young child who has scored their first ever goal or who has made a great pass to a teammate and who hears the cheers of encouragement coming from the sideline. They absolutely beam with pride ... and that just makes them want to try and try again.

I love it, I always have and I always will.

SMALL FIELDS BREED BETTER PLAYERS

Have you noticed how comfortable the World Cup players are in tight spaces? Have you noticed that they can pass the ball only 2 to 3 metres and still find space to play?

That comes from years and years of playing and training in small-sided games.

The size of FootballSSG’s fields are specifically designed to have players in tight spaces, encouraging them:
- to have their eyes up … to look for opportunities
- to take light touches on the ball … to maintain close control
- to not be concerned about being tackled when a defender is still metres away from them

The constant repetition of this situational play is developing players’ abilities … without them even knowing it!

It cannot be replicated on larger fields, where too much space just encourages a kick-and-chase style of play and has far, far less impact to the development of players’ skills.

This is not a secret known only to FootballSSG. It is, however, just another way our rules develop player's footballing abilities.

Teaching a child (or anyone, for that matter) to kick the ball with their non-preferred foot is, perhaps surprisingly, simple. There are only four things that a player needs to do to become "two footed":
- place the non-kicking foot beside the ball
- kick the ball with the instep of the foot
- keep weight forward (ie - don't lean back)
- practice it over and over

FootballSSG's rules place each player, from time to time, in a situation where they'll be encouraged to kick the ball with their non-preferred foot (this is the practice it over and over bit). This is just one of the many ways that our rules, created with the former Head Coach of the Australian National Men's Futsal team, develop player's footballing abilities.

Fun fact … the Northern Beaches might never have had “summer soccer” if it wasn’t for the decades-long dedication of the people behind FootballSSG’s and CC Strikers' ( Collaroy Cromer Strikers Football Club ) comps.

How do I know?
- Because I established and I am the organiser of FootballSSG.
- Because I was the one that helped Claire Prior establish Mosman’s first comps.
- Because I was the one that organised Wakehurst’s first comps.
- Because I was the one that organised Melwood Oval’s first comps.
- And because, for many years, CC Strikers organised the only other summer soccer comps on the Northern Beaches.

MWFA never showed any interest, years ago, nor did any other club. It’s only now, that there are thousands of participants (thanks primarily to FootballSSG’s and CC Strikers’ efforts) that they have constructed a way, via Council, to try to take control of it all.

FootballSSG’s comps have survived, because we saw the writing on the wall 18 months ago and took actions to ensure we could deliver our much loved comps to the community, now and long in to the future.

Oh … just before any keyboard warriors chime in with unfounded and nonfactual claims about FootballSSG being a profit-driven company … we are a Pty Ltd company and, under Australian federal law, our Constitution requires us to operate as a not-for-profit using income to advance amateur sport, which is exactly what we do and have always done. We set up as we did to protect ourselves against EXACTLY what has happened to CC Strikers.

Over the years we have invested tens of thousands of dollars towards referee training, provided countless free registrations for people doing it a bit tough, purchased boots and shin guards for people doing it really tough, donated hundreds of thousands of dollars of equipment to communities around Australia, the South Pacific and Africa, loaned our equipment to local football clubs and other small-sided competitions and donated footballs and training equipment as well as free rego vouchers to use for fundraising activities to countless schools around the Northern Beaches. We’ve also tried to donate significant monies to Council, with the only caveat being that the money needs to be spent to improve and maintain the sports fields … but Council declined our offer (I recall the exact response was “… people don’t usually place conditions when they make a donation …”).

Northern Beaches Council have had a clear and comprehensive understanding our not-for-profit structure since 2018, when we officially adopted our legally binding Constitution.

Your elected Council There are 15 Councillors – three Councillors for representing each of our five wards.

Very pleased to have spent 4th July loading a truck full of gear for donation to Lengo Football Academy, who we've supported for 12-13 years now. We're chuffed to know that our support helps to ensure many, many Tanzanian children are going to school while playing the game that they love.

Registrations are now being accepted for our upcoming 2026 season. Competitions are being organised for all age groups at both Curl Curl and Narrabeen.
