Midweek session with a few Dragons headed out for a dive around the National Park area. With safety in mind, and a plan to match, we headed out into cracking conditions. Vis was great, the fish life was quiet today. Paul Peekay Kim burlied up some yakka and only a few of the school decided that they were hungry enough to feed on the scraps, so we couldn’t even get any action going. We shot a few reefies for a feed. The usual suspects Drummer, Goaties, Leather Jackets and a Red Rocky. I believe a few abs were found as well. Hansel was on boaty duty, Paul in the water, and Conor Kelly newest member of the club backed up after the Meroo trip on the weekend. The highlight of the morning was the whales. I have never seen so many whales. In all the years I have spent in and around the ocean, today was unbelievable. Everywhere you looked whales were breaching. Some gliding silently up right beside the boat extremely close to shore. Gets the heart pumping when they decide to visit that close.

June Social: Cold Water, Big Reds, and Great Company! 🐟🔫

Our June social trip was one for the books! We had a solid crew hit the coast with one primary goal: targeting the king of the NSW reefs—the elusive Snapper.

The mornings were crisp, but the spirits were high as we hit the water before sunrise. With 15m visibility, the reef looked incredible, even with a bit of surface discolouration. While the Snapper proved their reputation for being the hardest species to hunt, the action was still intense. Harry and I even spotted a trophy red nearing the 4kg mark—a massive reminder of what’s patrolling the reef!

While the “Reds” managed to outsmart us this time, the reef was absolutely alive. I was stoked to land a new PB/first-time species: a beauty of a Long Snout Boarfish (54cm, 2.12kg).

When the snapper proved too flighty in the late afternoon, we pivoted to crayfish and abalone hunting. Luke, Joel, and I gave it another go on day two, burleying hard and getting the snapper on the move, but they were definitely switched on. Luke’s still kicking himself for that near-miss on a Panny!

At the end of the day, the esky was full. We walked away with a great mixed bag including Boarfish, Black Drummer, Red Rock Cod, King Wrasse, Silver Trevally, Yellowfin Bream, Blackspot Goatfish, Red Morwong, Bastard Trumpeter, Luderick, and Aussie Salmon.

The South Coast is an epic spot—even with the cheeky possums and a few unwanted hitchhiking ticks on the way home!

Nothing beats ending the day with a fresh fish dinner and a catch-up around the fire. Huge thanks to everyone who came out—this is what the club is all about. Next one in the calendar is Boat Harbour Abs & Cray bash and family catch up at Kurnell Reccas 🤙

RESULTS FOR THE FRESHWATER WORLDS ARE IN! 🇳🇿🇦🇺
Gunther and Mick have placed 3rd in the master category🥉.
Congratulations guys!
Visibility held between 3-15m and temps around 18degrees.
Day 1 the boys weighed in 17 fish for 5.5kg and day 2 weighed in 25 fish for 8kg! Totaling 42 fish for 13.5kg.
The masters leaders presented 72 fish total for 21.8kg.

Catfish are invasive in Lake Taupo and are the only species targeted in this event, all fish are sent to be used as fertiliser.

The boys also snuck in a nice ocean dive for a few nz snapper.

Well done Gunther and Mick aswell as all other competitors.

Gunther Pfrengle and Mick Michael Arentz both members of are repping for Australia at the World Freshwater Championships held in Lake Taupo in New Zealand.

The event soley targets the invasive catfish population in the lake, thereby helping local ecological management.

The festivities officially kicked off yesterday, while the tournament runs for two days over Friday and Saturday.

This week, from the 28th of February to the 8th of March is Sea Week!

Sea Week is all about spreading awareness, sharing knowledge of, and showing appreciation for our oceans. This year’s theme is ‘Caring for Planet Water’ and links to Ocean Literacy Principle (OLP) 4: ‘The ocean makes the Earth habitable’.



Why does it matter?



Australia has one of the largest ocean territories in the world, making it especially important for us to be ocean literate. Ocean Literacy focuses on understanding how the ocean influences our lives and how we, in turn, influence the ocean. Our oceans perform many critical functions including:



Climate regulation – oceans transport heat, regulating temperatures, and capturing ~90% of excess heat generated by CO2 emissions​​​​🌡️​​​​
Oxygen production – photosynthetic marine organisms such as phytoplankton, algae, and bacteria produce more than 50% of the Earth’s oxygen​​​​🍃​​​​
Carbon capture – the ocean is the biggest carbon sink in the world, capturing ~30% of CO2 emissions​​​​🔐​​​​
Resource provision – the ocean is a critical source of food, medicinal resources, minerals, energy sources, and industrial materials​​​​🎣​​​​
Transportation – the majority of global trade is conducted via oceanic transportation​​​​🚢​​​​
Recreation – oceans allow for leisure activities such as boating, fishing, swimming, diving, etc.​​​​🤿​​​​
Economic growth – oceans and their exploration provide valuable employment and tourism opportunities​​​​💵​​​​
