Check out the second half of the conversation with past UWA Triathlon Club member & UWA Exercise & Sport Science graduate Adam O’Byrne
🎙️ New Podcast Episode
Adam O'Byrne: Ice Swimming, Cold Water and Training for the Moments (Part 2)
In Part 1, Adam shared his journey from Ironman triathlon to completing the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming.
But instead of stopping there, he began seeking out colder and colder water.
In this episode we explore:
❄️ Ice swimming and cold-water adaptation
❄️ Completing an Ice Mile
❄️ The Frosted Triple Crown and Iron Iceman
❄️ Managing risk in extreme environments
❄️ Balancing endurance sport, career & family life
❄️ Why some of the most important training sessions aren't about fitness at all
One of the biggest takeaways from this conversation was Adam's advice to:
"Always train for the moments as well."
Not just the event itself, but the moments when things don't go to plan—when you're uncomfortable, doubting yourself, or facing something completely unexpected.

Really enjoyed reconnecting with Adam and reflecting on a journey that has evolved from Ironman to some of the world's most iconic open water swims.

How did you sleep last night?
New episode 🎧
Sleep is something we all do — but not something most of us fully understand.
In this episode, I sit down with Dr Jen Walsh, a sleep scientist from The University of Western Australia , Centre for Sleep Science for a really practical conversation about sleep in the context of real life.
We talk about:
• how sleep actually works (without overcomplicating it)
• early morning training and the impact on sleep
• how much sleep we really need
• naps, caffeine, alcohol, and routines
• and whether a poor night’s sleep really matters
This isn’t about optimisation or elite performance — it’s about understanding sleep well enough to make better decisions within the lives we actually live.
Thanks again to Jen for such a thoughtful and grounded conversation.

🎙️ New Episode Out Now
Dr Terry Griffiths: Curiosity, Preparation and the Australian Triple Crown
In this episode, I sit down with Terry to explore a very different approach to open water swimming.
Terry isn’t chasing podiums—he’s driven by curiosity and a desire to understand the ocean more deeply. That mindset has taken him from his first Rottnest solo crossing through to completing the Australian Triple Crown, tackling three very different and challenging swims across channel, coastline and river environments.
We talk about:
🌊 What draws him to longer swims
🔬 How his work as an ocean engineer shapes the way he thinks in the water
🧭 The role of preparation, planning, and problem-solving
🤝 The importance of the team around you
🇬🇧 And what he’s still learning ahead of a future English Channel attempt
There’s a lot in this one for anyone interested in approaching open water swimming a bit more thoughtfully—whether you’re chasing big swims or just looking to better understand the ocean you’re swimming in.
