🏑 Finals Fever for the Hockey Geelong Sharks! 🦈

The Hockey Geelong Sharks Junior Representative teams begin their finals campaigns today, with all four teams competing in the finals!

What an outstanding season, with one team finishing 1st on the ladder and three teams finishing 2nd. A fantastic achievement across the entire Junior Sharks program.

We had a great day for our Grand Final on Saturday August 22, commencing under the rain and finishing under lights.

It was always going to be a different type of day than what we have been used to. With cars parked close, food vans on hand and a large crowd, it was like a country football match. A great atmosphere. Very different to what we will experience next year.

Congratulations to all of the players, coaches, umpires and officials who gave so much on the day. At 7.15am we had some twenty people already there putting up marques and moving tables and chairs. The Saints club provided a fabulous BBQ and their volunteers were busy all day. You had to get in early for their famous egg and bacon rolls. We must thank all of those from clubland who volunteered their time. We had too many volunteers at one stage which was a good position to be in.

What caught my attention was the hockey talent on display from the Under 12 game at 8.15am to the last game with the Men’s Division 1 game between Torquay and Newtown.

The last game, D1 Men, was a thrilling display of skills, fitness and endeavour. Pearce and Tom umpired excellently. While we seek to be the winner the most important part of any sport was clearly evident and that was playing in the right spirit. All players congratulated the other side which was good to see.

The umpiring was exceptional and the day allowed the umpires to take part in their Grand Final. Pearce Frost did a great job in organizing the umpire roster.

Hockey Geelong Hall of Fame - Matt Harper

Congratulations to Matt Harper who has been inducted into the Hockey Geelong Hall of Fame. This is a justly deserved honour for a well known member of the Hockey Geelong community.

Matt’s hockey history is long and varied, with many highlights along the way.

Matt began playing hockey for Geelong Hockey Club at the age of 12, and since then has played for Winchelsea, South Barwon, Torquay and Hockey Geelong Masters and Sharks teams. Matt won a Gold Medal in 2019 playing with the Victoria 45+ team in the Australian Masters Championships.

Matt has won the Hockey Geelong Association Best and Fairest, an incredible 5 times and has been the competition's top goal scorer many times!

Matt's family all play hockey and he loves to see them succeed in their sport. His highlight was winning the Division 2 premiership in 2025 playing with both of his sons.

It was with great sadness that we heard the news of the passing of Charlie Martin last Sunday evening.

Charlie was a Life Member of Hockey Geelong as well as a Life Member of Hockey Victoria for his services to hockey in general and umpiring in particular. He was well known throughout the state for his commitment to hockey.

Charlie's contribution to hockey in the Geelong region included administration of:
🏑 Victorian Women's Country Championships
🏑 Winchelsea Hockey Club
🏑 Hockey Geelong competition results and players registration
🏑 Training and mentoring of umpires

Charlie mentored many local hockey players and umpires, encouraging them and guiding all in all ways.

Charlie is survived by Bev and two sons, Jim and Ben, daughters-in-law Lucy and Leah and grandchildren Thomas, Noah and Orla.

The funeral for Charlie Martin is on Monday 31 August at Quinn Funerals Chapel at Wesley Place, 15 Skene Street, Colac from 1.00pm. A private burial will take place after.

The Hockey Geelong community is richer for Charlie’s immense contribution and poorer for his passing. RIP Charlie.

It’s time to celebrate!

Our Festival of Hockey is coming to Stead Park from Friday 23 to Sunday 25 October, celebrating the opening of our fantastic new facilities - a new pitch and a new pavilion.

We are particularly keen to see past and present members joining us for Friday Night Nibbles on October 23.

The Festival of Hockey will be a weekend full of hockey, community and celebration, bringing together past and present players, coaches, umpires, families and supporters.
