Part of our community got out on the weekend and learnt some Brazilian jiu jitsu. Incredible to see the strength and confidence from their training in the gym transfer straight into a brand new skill

Take the time to appreciate your own hero’s journey.

We talk a lot about PRs, pull-ups, and improving our skills around here. But none of those are actually the result that matters most.

The real one is the person who didn’t hit snooze. Who showed up after the bad day. Who finished the rep when quitting felt easier. None of that shows up on a whiteboard, but it’s the thing that actually built you.

So before you look at what you lifted today, take a second to notice who you had to become to lift it.

What’s a moment you’re proud of that never made a leaderboard? Send to a friend who has had an amazing journey.

Most people understand that reducing the load changes a workout.

Fewer realise that changing the movement can change the physical quality being trained.

A box jump is a power movement: the athlete has to produce enough force to leave the floor, and produce it quickly.

A step-up can be an excellent scale for impact tolerance, balance, confidence, pain or fatigue, but it usually shifts the stimulus toward controlled strength and work capacity.

When jumping is appropriate, lowering the target (even to a plate), can preserve the explosive intent. A 2024 study found that box height had little effect on peak power and most take-off measures when participants were instructed to jump maximally.

That matters as we age.

Muscle power tends to decline earlier and more steeply than strength, and it is closely associated with mobility, daily function, falls and, in observational studies, mortality risk.

The lesson is not “everyone must box jump.”

The lesson is: train strength and power, and scale each quality deliberately.

Scale the obstacle, not automatically the stimulus.

Most oly coaches can tell if you’re going to miss the lift just by watching the first second of your feet. Transferring weight throughout the lift is a critical skill to developing a solid base for both Olympic lifts.
