Early in the week, the weather forecast for this years' Sydney Snapper Championship was looking good. Friday morning appeared to be a great day but the forecast was for up to 35k winds in the afternoon. Some boats launched from Long Reef, most boats launched from Bayview and Roseville.
On Saturday the wind was up again. Although gentle in the morning the wind picked up again around lunch reaching 30 knots
Sunday morning was similar again to Saturday and fishing was able to be done before the wind got up and the “weigh-in” after lunch.
Competitors were able to launch from Long Reef boat ramp on both Saturday and Sunday but the ocean was lumpy due to the nor’easter.
Only a handful of anglers fished on Friday afternoon with most fishing effort on Saturday and Sunday morning.
This year we had 74 anglers enter the championship with 61 adult and 13 junior entries. 33 anglers caught fish and entered photos of their fish in the competition with a total of 72 Snapper entered in the competition.
Congratulations to all the Division winners, place getters and competitors.
The Open division was won by Bailey Thorncraft who caught the longest snapper which measured 79.4cms.
Nathan McManus took out the prize for the three longest fish for a total length of 192.4cm.
The Ladies division was won by Maya Covic with a snapper of 65.0cm, and the Junior Division was won by Jacob Rauschenbach with his fish measuring 46.6cm.
The Ugliest snapper was won by Bailey Thorncraft.
The Warringah Anglers Club would like to thank all the fishing clubs and anglers for participating in what was a very successful event.
We owe a special thanks to the generous sponsors for giving their support to this great cause. The profits from the 2023 Snapper Championship will be donated to Bear Cottage and this year we donated $12,000.00
