Have you ever thought about why I conduct certain lessons over a shorter distance?

I truly believe in teaching the most accurate technique for swimming strokes at a shorter distance to refine these skills. "Short distance" lessons are used until a young swimmer can execute each drill with efficient technique (and to the best of their ability) along with a powerful kicking action 🐳

Swimming longer distances before mastering this can lead to poor swimming habits, making the learning process less effective and safe 🐳

Additionally, "short distance" lessons allow instructors to better correct swimmers' techniques 🐳

Understanding Swimming "Myths"

My child no longer requires lessons since they have learned to swim.

However, the reality is that it can be challenging for parents to accurately assess their child's swimming competence. For instance, just because a child can swim from one end of the backyard pool to the other does not necessarily mean they have acquired all the necessary skills to be safe around water.

Royal Life Saving Australia's National Swimming and Water Safety Framework outlines three national benchmarks for children at different ages:
- by age 6
- minimum competencies by age 12
- minimum competencies by age 17 years

Zeeswim Aquademy's benchmarks include:

Orange Clownfish, Blue Clownfish, and Red Clownfish - water familiarization.
Gold Fish - developing early confidence in the water.
Tang Fish - enhancing early confidence in the water and mastering safety swim techniques (swim, roll, swim).
Angelfish - mastering freestyle and backstroke along with essential safety behaviors.
Dart Fish - mastering freestyle and backstroke while applying real-world survival and rescue skills, including the introduction of breaststroke and butterfly kicks.

Sadly, many Australian children still possess poor or limited swimming skills. Like anything else, "practice makes better." If you want your child to maintain their swimming abilities and independent drowning prevention skills, it is crucial that they practice regularly.

Understanding Swimming "Myths"

It's essential for parents to recognise that the journey of learning to swim and acquiring survival skills isn't always straightforward. So, don't feel disheartened if your child doesn't seem to be advancing every week. The truth is, there will often be periods of stagnation and even some setbacks while a new skill is being mastered, followed by a resurgence in progress πŸ’«

This pattern is common when learning any new ability in life!

At times, it may even seem like a skill that was previously acquired is slightly diminishing while a new one is being developed, but rest assured, it will eventually rebound!
