Mal was a flamboyant businessman best known for being the owner developer of the Aanuka resort. His great love was Rugby League, and his contribution to our club was immense.
Mal was skilful halfback and a great leader and master motivator. In 1983 as Captain Coach, he led Coffs to a premiership in a memorable Grand Final win over Woolgoolga. In 1990 he coached Coffs 18's to a premiership and 1991 coached Coffs a Grand Final in First Grade.

Mal was unique in Rugby League in that no other halfback in Group Two turned up to games in Gucci suits, driving a Ferrari, and then played the game so tough. He loved football and footballers, and brought his extensive list of celebrity contacts to training and games to liven things up and bring the playing group together.

In 1990 he had Jeff Fenech and Johnny Lewis in camp motivating the boys before, the Grand Final, filming TV commercials at our ground with Johnny R***r and our first grade squad or arranging a mock wedding at Aanuka or having entertainers from the resort play at training or club functions the list goes on.

Mal was truly one of a kind and one of the great characters in club history.

SEMI FINAL RESULTS | WHAT A WEEKEND

Finals footy can deliver the highest of highs and the toughest of heartbreaks — and this weekend we experienced both.

Our Under 18’s showed an incredible amount of fight. Playing a man down for around 80% of the game, they refused to go away and battled right until the very end. Locked up after full time, the game went into Golden Point, where unfortunately Nambucca found the one point that separated the sides, 13–12.

A heartbreaking way to finish their season, but an effort they can be immensely proud of.

Our First Grade side also left absolutely everything on the field. Against the odds, they fought for the full 80 minutes against Macksville and came agonisingly close, eventually falling just two points short, 26–24.

To both sides, their players, coaches and support staff — thank you. You represented the Red & Gold with pride and fought until there was nothing left to give.

But Sunday gave us something pretty special to celebrate…

In their inaugural season in the Group 2 Women’s Tackle competition, our girls have booked themselves a place in the 2026 GROUP 2 GRAND FINAL!

Once again it was a tough, physical and closely fought battle against Nambucca. But when it mattered, the girls dug deep, held their nerve and came away with a brilliant 16–10 victory.

From building a team at the beginning of the year, to winning their way into a Grand Final in their very first season — what this group has achieved is something our entire club is incredibly proud of.

Now they get a well-earned two-week break to recover, regroup and prepare for the big one.

FINALS RESULTS

A huge weekend of finals football for the Comets, with our Under 18’s, Women’s Tackle and First Grade sides all securing wins and progressing to the next round.

Our Reserve Grade side’s season came to a heartbreaking end, going down to the Grafton Ghosts by just two points. We are devastated for the players and coaching staff, but incredibly proud of their commitment, resilience and achievements throughout the season.

A special thank you to Jacob and Brendan for the work they have put into leading this team. The effort, belief and pride shown by the entire group has represented our club extremely well.

At the Comets, we win as a club and we lose as a club. While we celebrate the teams moving forward, we also stand alongside our Reserve Grade side and acknowledge everything they have contributed this year.

The work isn’t finished yet.
