Mordi Winter Series, races 5, 6 and 7 were full of learning experiences for our beginner sailors Brendan, Tess and Annabel, while Simon was out on the LT-Windsurfer refining his technique.

Sunshine and light winds today for races 3 and 4 of the Mordi Winter Series

Representing Carrum Sailing and Motor Boat Club we had,

Simon on the LT Windsurfer, with two 6th place finishes, putting him 3rd overall in the series so far for the Windsurfer class! 👏🏻

Brendan and Tess in Pacer 3140 — new to the world of sailing racing! They finished with a DNF in Race 1, but managed to regroup and complete race 2. Small wins! 💪🏽

Brendan got the new Carrum Pacer 2291 out on the water and was joined by Simon on the LT-Windsurfer along with the birds.

Yesterday marked the start of the Mordi Winter Series. Blue skies, sunshine, flat water, and 20+ knots of wind. Doesn't get much better than that!

Simon was the first from our club to take part, representing CSMBC on his LT windsurfer. Well done Simon!

Just a reminder of the rich history of the Carrum Sailing Club.

1973-74 - A hybrid single handed 12 foot dinghy was being sailed by the designer Rex Fettell. Hybrid, because it had a rainbow mast and Pacer sail. Rex mainly used the boat to sail around Point Lonsdale during his caravan holidays. Graham Morris and I got an opportunity to borrow it one weekend and loved sailing it around Safety Beach. Other sailors at Carrum Sailing & Motor Boat Club also tried it out and felt it filled a gap in dinghies. At the time there was no economical single handed boat suitable for children coming out of Sabots and Minnows and for adults who wanted a boat that did not need high physical strength.

A small group at CSC members got together in 1974 to discuss with Rex the idea of starting a building group. The initial talks were to establish four points, type of mast, sail, sail emblem and name of class. Costs and easy availability were to be major considerations so a parallel mast section the same as used on Pacers was selected. Frank Hammond at Hammond sails was contacted to design a suitable sail and John Bell got the Art Department at Jordanville Technical School to design the Logo. A lot of discussion took place as to whether the logo should incorporate the letters CSC but it was decided that if the boat became popular it was better to not affiliate it with a particular club. Naming of the class finally came down to Rex's sons and Sabre was chosen.

Graham and I got very involved- Graham with the paper work and myself with the building drawings.

One request Rex had was to start the sail numbers at 10. The group then started building in 1974, and listed below are the owners and sail numbers.

Bill Sterling, Lew George, Ted Handley and Ted Wangman were also part of the oiginal 12 who started the association.

Around this time the VYC was running the "One of a Kind" Regata at Carrum and I was chosen to race the boat. This regatta is used to check current handicaps and establish handicaps for new yachts. At the time I don't think anyone could have predicted such a rapid expansion of the class. We were kept extremely busy making templates, printing building notes and ordering bulk quantities of masts.

Friday nights AGM marked the successful conclusion of the 2025/26 season and we were thrilled to welcome new members to our club!

Our newest members haven’t wasted any time getting involved, they’ve taken advantage of our club-owned boats and windsurfers, hitting the water and making the most of what this club has to offer.

Our club wouldn’t be what it is today without the volunteers behind it.

Congratulations to Lloyd Marks and Kevin Norton who were adopted into the hall of fame (life membership) for decades of commitment to CSMBC

We thank our committee of 2025/26, for all of their hard work in making the club what it is today,

And we welcome our committee of 2026/27, some continuing and some new;
Drew Henry (President), Steve Mcclelland (Vice President), Nathan Lombard (Secretary), Lloyd Marks (Treasurer) and general committee members - Brendan Young, Tess Mathews and Simon Dwyer.

We may be a small club, but we're growing and that's something to celebrate. As we look forward, we hope to continue growing this community with social sails being a focus, whether that be to practise techniques or to enjoy a coffee or ice cream down at Seaford. We will continue to welcome members with experience and those just starting out. If you have been thinking about giving sailing or windsurfing a go, now's the perfect time to join us.

With the sun shining, who wouldn’t want to be out on the water? Light winds today at Carrum beach did not stop Brendan and Tess. Pacer ‘Penny Lane’ was rigged up with a ‘new’ old main sail and taken out to practise tacks.
